The Spiritual is a personal relationship. Being religious is a show.

The difference is really man made. Both spiritual people, and religious people try to be moral, and aware of the spiritual forces at work in this world. Religious people may be more formal in ritual, and more focused on God, but that may not be true. I think it is all a game of semantics. In the dictionary, you will not find a clear distinction, between the words religious and spiritual.

I think that the religious base their spirituality on rules. What must I do to get to heaven? What must I do to please God? They revel in the fact that they go to church twice week, that they have five bibles at home(probably hardly ever been read), they know all the right answers to give. They are the ones that think what a "good person" they are and how religious they are. Most religious people are very pious.
On the other hand, if you take out the whole concept of religion and rules, and truly try to live a life that is pleasing to Jesus, basing your life on His words and what He has done on the cross, you show sincere love to your fellow man, the Holy Spirit is your guide, you go to church because it deeply satisfies you, not so that people can commend you for it, you do good works not so you can score brownie points with God but because you have Jesus in you, you are spiritual.

Spiritual can be used in a religious sense, meaning one has a personal and harmonious relationship with God. But relating with evil spirits is also spiritual. Not relating with either can also be spiritual, like Buddhist meditation.

Ideally an religion is a way to balance your social and sprititual life. But today it has drifted far away from that. Now a religion has become more like a club of people who have decided to get a branding of a paticular God Seeking path. And spiritualism has entirely remained for those who want to go upwards spiritually.

Religion is an "outward" act of affiliation toward a faith system...

Living spiritually, in the Biblical sense, is to obey the commandments of God, to trust in His Atonement and to spread the Gospel...

James 1:27
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

That about sums up our role in how God wants us to worship Him but we tend to complicate the beauty in all His simplicity. Jesus says..if you love me..you will keep my commandments. Well, what are those...first to Love God with all your being and the next is to love those around you and do for them as you would have done for yourself. You worship God by idolizing Him in His Way with us...as He does for us..we are to do for each other. As you see someone in need...act as best you can to help that person as He gives so freely to us in all ways...though most don't acknowledge this. Love in Christ, ~J~
