Just received new digital Nikon D80 with a Tamron 28-80mm lens. I have not inserted the battery yet (not charged). With lens attached, I look through the viewfinder and it looks fuzzy. Is there something wrong or do DSLR's need power to get a picture?

Put in the battery so the lens will focus. If it is still out of focus, the diopter ring might be set incorrectly for your eyes. This is a small wheel in the area of your viewfinder - or check your instruction manual. Basically turn it a few clicks until the image sharpens.

While waiting for the battery to charge you can READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual that came with the camera. You'll then be able to answer your own question.
