Im a 19yr girl from Australia and am currently studying law at a really top university. I worked really hard to get to where I am and enjoy my course, although it is quite hard and requires a lot of work.

Recently I was approached by a modelling agent and after doing a few test shots and castings they offered to sign me! The only problem is that if I do sign with them I am obligated to go overseas for shows etc and have been told that I would not be able to continue with uni (at least in the short-term future). What should I pick?? Im really confused because I dont want to throw away all my hard work but the prospect of modelling is very exciting. PLEASE help!!!!

There are a few options...

Firstly, I dont think you would be obligated to do anything. I have know people who model, and they tell their agent when they're available and when they can make it for castings/shoots etc.

Talk it over with the agency. You should only have to do as much work as you want. Try and research some employment law!

Secondly, even if you do try and juggle work and study, both law and modelling are very strenous, and you wouldnt want to go crazy trying to do both.

Also, in modelling you need to put in hard slog at the beginning to get you face about, so people come to you. Then you can sit back a little, and take your pick of the work.

What one of my friends (studying at Oxford University, one of the top places in the world) did was to take a year out from her course. Speak to your department honestly, and tell them you dont want to compromise your studies by trying and failing to do both. I would emphasise the fact you want to get experience of the world of work, and take time out for personal development and raising cash (in law you earn very little at first) over the exicitement of modelling.

You can then spend a year in the industry, before going back to your studies. You can find out if you really want to continue with modelling, in which case you can talk it over with your agents, with whom you will have more leeway as a more experienced, better known and more in demand model.

One suggestion; before committing to a sabbatical year, do some more modelling over the holidays for a trial period. Many new models drop out early on so more expereince the better

You must first know your priorities and what's important to you.

Being a lawyer is a more stable career. If you are keen on helping people then this is more suitable for you. The earning capacity might not be that big BUT you have to consider your future or how you will see yourself 10 years from now. Right now, you are young but when you get older and you physically change - what will your future be?

For me, being a model is a back up plan or second priority. I would not sacrifice my diploma and credentials for it. Although I may earn more here - but would my future be stable here.

Realistically, nothing is easy (including the modeling job). Being a lawyer and a model will both require hard work and dedication. But if you are happy with what you are doing - then the current predicament would not be such an issue.

Good luck!

Stay in school, yes modeling would look exciting, but the hard work you put in to school is nothing compared to what you would do in modeling. You have something of a life now, as a model you would be going from early morning to late at night, sometimes shooting the same thing over and over. Serious question, was this photo shoot up and up, or was this some people getting you overseas, and using you as a prostitute. That has happened many times in the past, with no hope of getting back to the states. Think really hard on this one, cause you could lose your life.

Modelling has a use by date, and most models are discarded by age 25, or 30 tops. Being a lawyer, means you can work for the next 40 years.

I would finish school first, and then do the modelling. You can always go back to being a lawyer later when the modelling career ends.

If the agency starts pressuring you, then tell them to get lost. If they really want you, they can wait a few years until you graduate. If they say they can't wait - then IMO they're more concerned with using your looks now and dumping you as soon as you look too old.

19? Hmm.
Law school is no joke, and it would be better for you to take in as much of your studies as you can while your brain is still young.
One the one hand, you'd be breaking your momentum, and might not be able to go back to where you left off.
On the other hand, going straight into a legal career might suffocate you, and you should enjoy modelling for a year, why not?

Can you suspend your registration at your uni for a year?
Check.
Also, modelling is not necessarily the easiest job in the world.
You shall allow people to mess with your skin and hair, and you'd have to wear unhealthy shoes.
But it would give you the chance to see the world in a fast-paced business that would probably awaken you to a wider view of the world.
You could meet many people, for whom you could be a lawyer later?

Just use your legal skills and check the small print of your contract, and make sure you are not abused.

Check the company's background, too, and who they deal with and how.

Ask your school counsellor, if there is one who would not think less of you for wanting to try something different, and your family.

Then have a think and make your mind up.

Good luck!

P.S.: I agree with the people here: stay in school and do modelling on the side. There are plenty of agencies who take you part-time. Modelling is an airy-fairy job that holds no guarantees, and is, frankly, only glamorous on glossy pages.
Get your degree, then do what you want.

You should become what would be best for your future, which is a lawyer. Modeling seems like a fun and glamorous job but then there are downsides to it such as watching what you eat and being turned down from clients. Also, you can't model once you hit an old age. Being a lawyer is a fufilling job and you'll make great money!

Stay in school, get your law degree and if you want to try to model part-time. A career like law is with you for life, a career in modelling will only last as long as your looks.

FINISH LAW SCHOOL!! It is only a few years and you will have it for the rest of your life. Modeling is fun and you can still do it after your graduate. However, modeling is not for life and your education is. Invest in the future, experience the present.

I would stay in school..Many others above have answered question of what they think you should do..I agree w/ them thatway...But what do you really feel about being a lawyer or modeling...You say youd enjoy both..and that studying to be a lawyer is hard...one person said that its fulfilling...I believe them...A lawyer has to fight for their client to the hilt...and that in itself is fulfilling..Helping someone plead their case in court..etc...Modeling is fun and exciting cuz of the glam involved..You really think about it what it all comes down to is the glam or assisting someoneelse plead their case..they both make you alot of $ but really think ahead your future..which jobs going to be fulfilling to you and to the other persons involved...Hows it goin to affect your future..youre only nineteen..You ve your whole life ahead of you..youre beautiful, talented, and maybe some day you want a family? Think of your future children...do you want to retire early...I know thats waaayy down road for you..I do know this that if I could go back in time to nineteen...then Id think my whole entire future through for what you do now will affect "Down the road/path" later in your future...Youre faced w/ if you quit school you may never return..If you dont quit..youd think youd be missing out on the glam of things..what you also enjoy doin...This is a very hard question to answer..and ultimately its your decision...and I hope that you can make the right one for you..I wish you luck....Dont Forget About What You Do Now Will Affect Later... ;)))

My personal opinon......stay in school. Models don't last very long honey. Your education will last a lifetime. If you really wanna model, then maybe you can do some local modeling in your spare time while in school. I had a friend who did that and it worked out well for her. Good luck to you hun. :o)

Edit: My friend's local modeling jobs helped her pay for school as well.
