I am really falling short of good advices. Let me tell you what problem I am facing.

I enjoy photography but I that is limited to just as a hobby. For casual photography I bought Sony Ericsson W810 mobile with 2MP phone. You may find this very funny but at that point of time I did not have money to put into a camera and also I did not have any passion for photography. Since then after having taken so many photos with the mobile I feel I have improved and my passion has increased. So now I am somewhat ready to buy a camera. Here lies the confusion.

I need your advice here. One of my friend who is an expert in photography tells me to go for Canon SLR which costs about Rs 20K. Another one tells me to go for Sony or Nikkon which falls within Rs 5K.

I do not want to work with a less expensive camera which does not provide good results. Did you have any similar experience like me? Should I go straight for an SLR or a normal digicam?

You find yourself taking a lot of photos because your camera phone is convenient. Would you still be taking so many images with a dSLR, which is much larger and less convenient? If so then go that route. Remember that anyone that tells you that Canon lenses aren't any good hasn't seen the 90% of pro sports photographers shooting with Canon glass. Go to a camera store and look at the better compact cameras and compare the features and specs with an entry level dSLR, such as Canon's Rebel XTi or the Nikon equivalent.

As a Pro, got with the SLR. The abilty to change lenses is what makes it great. Start of with the 20d or 30d from Canon. Then later work you way up. But remember, it is the lense that makes the camera. So dont buy cheap lenses. If you want to do portraits got with the Sigma lenses if you need to save. Start of with a 24 to 70 2.8 lense. Then get the 50 1.8 lense. All the other lenses you can rent for cheap.
If it is sports 70 to 200 2.8

nikon dslr is more friendly for beginner than the canon one. Canon slr don't got auto iso which nikon has it for their current model. Also most lens canon comes with is crap unlike nikon, not to mention canon overall lens cost way more than nikon especially their L and IS lens. Go with NIkon, a good choice would be Nikon D40 and get a good lens like 18-200 VR or 55-200 for cheaper. If you want video and compact design go for top of the line Canon G9 probably the best digital camera that can fit your pocket also has video, 12mp
