For Trek, I am looking at 6500 and 6700. For Cannondale, maybe the F4 or Caffeine 3. Trek seems to have better specced components at a lower price, but heard many good things about Cannondale's frame. Also heard that Cannondale is made in USA, while Trek is manufactured in Taiwan. Not sure if this is true. I will be riding mostly on roads/pavements, hardly on trails. Anyone has experience with both brands? Which one can go faster? Appreciate your comments. Thanks!

Any one of these is a really nice bike. Frankly, though, they may be a bit overkill for mostly road riding. There isn't much difference between the components on any of the bikes. They are all decent quality stuff that is highly servicable and should give you lots of years of usage.

The real determining factor between these bikes should be how they feel when you take them for a ride. Take a nice long test ride on each bike and buy the one that is most comfortable for you. If you are going to do little trail riding, I'd suggest taking the knobbie tires off and get road tires. You'll go lots faster on pavement without the knobbies.

Also, if you really are planning on little trail riding, you may want a bike without front suspension and disk brakes. The front suspension and disk brakes make for a great trail bike, but add weight and slow you down on pavement.

Hope this helps and I hope you enjoy your bike.

Both are great bikes and you can't go wrong either way. Cannondale does make a nicer aluminum frame and therefore will be a little more expensive for a bike with similar components. The real deciding factor should be fit. Which bike fits you better? Cannondales are usually built a little longer in the top tube than Treks. Some like it long and some don't. If you like the Trek, but want something a bit more aggressive, look at the Gary Fisher. They are made by Trek but often have more aggressive geometries.

The bicycle business is so competitive now that bikes in the same price range are almost always comparable values. Ignore all the marketing hype and fancy brochures. Figure out how much money you have to spend and then try bikes from both manufacturers. Buy the one that fits you best. You will be able to tell if you actually test ride the bikes.

If you are mostly on the roads and your trails are fairly smooth, like the rails-to-trails conservancy paths, then you should also consider a hybrid bike. They will be much better suited for the road. Even if you end up with a mountain bike, you also may want to consider replacing the knoby tires with smooth tires if you don't need the extra traction on the trails.

Both Trek and Cannondale makes their higher end bikes in the USA, and the rest overseas. Both brands are good. Maybe I like the Cannondale frame more than Trek. Can you test ride them? Fit is more important than the components or frame.
