PEKING. Since the old British place-names have been replaced by the "correct" vernacular names, all the new ones sound ugly and low-class. Beijing is just one. Think of Guangzhou (Canton), Nanjing (Nanking). Chongching (Chunking).
And that's just China : think of Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Mumbai (Bombay), Bangladesh (Bengal), Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Burma).
