The cheapest HDTV service is to get it for free by using an antenna.

If you can get good UHF (analog ch 14-69) reception, you should be able to get some HD programing.

If you have a HDTV, it already has a digital tuner in it that can receive HD OTA programing. If you have a "HD Ready" TV, you will need an external HD ATSC tuner like the Samsung.

The idea that you need an "HD Antenna" is just marketing hype. TV antennas treat digital & analog signals exactly the same.

Cheat Sheet
--------------------------------------...
Old type OTA TV signals = NTSC = "Analog TV"

New type OTA TV signals = ATSC = "Digital TV" = DTV

Digital signals used on some cable systems = QAM

OTA = "Over the Air" = stuff you get through your TV antenna

Right now, I would stick with Direct TV since they seem to be upgrading to HD faster than anybody else....

The next one would be DISH NETWORK....

If you choose to get the Samsung reciever, you would actually be downgrading to Free Over the Air reception....Each TV station has only ONE HD CHANNEL and several Digital 480p stations to provide to you...
The dot 1 or dash 1 channel is HD, and the dot 2 3 or 4 channel is actually the digital 480 stations... So one out of 4 stations is actually HD...

Don't switch...stay with them because they will have MORE HD faster...

The others will catch up....they'll have to.

I agree with the poster above. Right now DirectTV has WAY more HD content and it's only $9.95 a month excluding the premium channels. They have the best deal right now for the content.
