i know its not illegal to upload music in the first place, but is it illegal for us to download them?

Actually you can not tell what is legal or illegal. The files are the same and weather you pay or not isn't a guarantee either. There are sites you can trust to do 'the right thing'.
You can not expect that Multiply.com is paying for files and neither are you. Expect it to be illegal.

If the music in question has been released on an album, then it's illegal to download it.
