This should be a great experience for you. Shotokan Dojos emphasize good form on Kata, and also point sparring. It should be a good exercise for you, as well as an effective form of self-defense. Enjoy the experience.

Every dojo is unique. Even the kata changes from school to school.
You SHOULD expect disciplined behavior, excellent form. Silence except from the teachers. The place should be clean.
The school should not offer a contract and you should never pay for rank.
Ask to observe the sparring. It should be controlled and organized.
The sensei should should have a direct lineage to Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of the art.
When class is over the children should be acting respectful.
Karate is taught in a three pronged manner
1 Kata
2 Kihon (basic)
3 Kumite (contact drills)

Shotokan is known for it's aggressive blocks and devastating striking techniques. Their motto's are "one hit= one kill" and " Never give up."

Have fun!

To get your but kicked. But all in good fun.

Expect discipline and in under a year you can break every bone in somebodyelses body...theoretically because you never will need it. That is the other thing you learn. You are a loser if you need to fight.

Go with an open mind, not with preconcieved notions of what to expect.
