God's first name was "el-ohim", a Hebrew word that means "god of the seas". This name is used about 31 times in the first chapter of Genesis.
God's next name was "y'hovah", a Hebrew name that comes from the verb "to be", meaning that he is the god who "is". He's the god that actually exists. This is the name used throughout the Penteteuch.
Interestingly, we are actually told when people began using this name. The very last verse in Genesis 4 states, "in those days, men began to call upon the name of "y'hovah". You really don't get the meaning of this verse unless you read Genesis in its Hebrew version. Up to that point, he was called "elohim", and afterward "y'hovah", implying that there was a need to differentiate him from other fake deities.
He is also refered to with the following generic names:
"el" (Hebrew word for "god")
"elah" (Hebrew word for "god")
"adonai" (Hebrew word for "lord")
"el shaddai" (Hebrew phrase for "god almighty")
From time to time you'll find that he is referred to with combinations of these words, especially "adonai y'hovah".
In English translations, "elohim" is usually rendered as "God", and "y'hovah" is usually rendered as "LORD" in all caps. "Adonai" is usually rendered as "lord" or "Lord", never in all caps.
In Bibles that use the word "Jehovah", they are trying to restore the correct translation from "y-hovah". The Jehovah's Witnesses have erred, though, because they do not restore all of God's names literally, only this one.

I have a King James bible and it lists 337 different names that the Lord is known by. Sorry, I can't give you all the references as this would take too long!

It certainly wasn't Jehovah - that's a middle-ages fabrication.
