flop comes from the sound the three cards in succession make when they hit a felt poker table. The turn got its name because it can and will turn the tide of the hand. the river got its name because the last card can sell you down the river.

In No limit, There is no limit to the amount you can bet each hand, as the name implies. Your objective is to knock the other players out when they go all in by having a better hand than you. Here are the possible hands you could have, in order from worst to best: High Card-No cards match Pair-Two of the same card by value, not suit Two Pair-Two 'Pairs' Three Of a Kind-Three of one value Straight-e.g. A,2,3,4,5 Must be five connected cards Flush-5 cars of the same suit Full House-a pair and a three of a kind Four of a Kind-four of one card value Straight Flush-Straight with suited cards Royal Flush-10,J,K,Q,A suited cards The game begins by either placing antes or blinds (small blind and big blind, determined by the position of the dealer chip) The Dealer deals two cards to each person with the dealer last and the small blind first The person to the left of the big blind goes first, and chooses whether to bet (match the big blind or highest bet so far) raise (You must put down at least twice the current bet), or fold (give up for that hand). In addition, the big blind player has the option to check (Put no money in), if nobody raises. Once all players have either matched the highest bet or folded. The dealer places one card in the discard pile and puts three cards face up (The flop). Betting resumes starting with the first person to the left of the dealer. Until someone decides to bet, you have the option to bet, check, or fold (You do not want to fold if you can check). After betting ends the dealer places another card in the discard pile and another card face up (The turn). Once betting is over, the dealer places a final card in the discard pile and places the final card face up on the table (The River). once betting ends, all remaining players show their cards, and the person with the best hand wins. In a case where two or more players have the same hand, either the winnings go by who has the best kicker (Highest card not included in the pair, two pair, etc.) if the hands use all five cards or the cards are all on the board, then the pot is split. There's a lot to playing this game and the best I can suggest to you is to buy a book and read up on strategies and more gameplay tips. This is one of those games that is easy to learn but hard to master. Good Luck!

The flop is named so because traditionally--after the first card is burned--the dealer thumbs out the first three community cards and FLOPS all three of them over.

The turn card is simply turned over as per normal and thus its name. The turn card is also known as 4th street; as it is the fourth community card to be dealt.

I was unable to find out why the river card is called the river card, though is also known as 5th street.
