I agree that there are phases of toddlers..Sometimes they dont want affection...I depends on the child..I have three boys a five year old, a three year old and a five month old..They can get so engrossed into what theyre doing that they dont want to be interrupted..On the other hand its best to show affection whenever possible..Children are empty vessels and learn by seeing...feeling, hearing, and smelling...all four senses...they need to feel loved all the time..show him you love him in other ways along w/ affection..pay attention to him besides his basic needs..hell eventually respond...sometimes it just takes awhile..It depends on personality..also.. Good luck to you ...build the memories of a lifetime...starting from day one.. ;))

A lack of physical affection is an indicator of autism, but it's not a definate thing, and if he otherwise does not have the tell-tale signs of autism, I wouldn't worry.
Keep in mind, rugs require standing still. Boys don't care for that, so they may not want to hug that much.
I'm wondering, you say he plays with you, do you think there's a chance he sees it as a game, or does he seem genuinely upset when you hug him? If he wiggles out but not really all that "bothered" by it (only sign being the escape), he could think you're playing a game of "catch me" or even tickles.

All three of my boys went through that stage where they are gaining independence. They want to run and crawl and play and they don't have too much patience for cuddles unless they're sick or sleepy. No big deal! Pretty soon when they figure out all the neat stuff they can do now, and settle down a bit, he'll be back in your arms. My youngest is now 3, and still a super busy body... but he still loves a good cuddle now and then! Just give him a little time! Best of luck!

Oh he probably just learned to walk or is close. He just wants to be on the go right now, testing his new abilities. He'll probably get back into the hugging stage somewhat soon. I hear once boys hit 10 it's out the window anyways still hug him and kiss him as much as you can.

My friends wee boy not give kisses or hugs but will shake your hand just don't force the issue and let him come round on his own

Yep don't worry, it's very normal. I have a 2 yo boy and a 3 yo girl. They both have their cuddly moments - usually when either tired or sick.... other than that... I have to grab them and tickle them or chase them for a bear hug!!! haha
They are fun aye!

Im hardly a mother, just a teenage boy
But... I'd say he's just really really curious about his surroundings and dying to explore :D
He might also just be a bit cranky, Im sure he'll cuddle in his own time
You have 18 years to enjoy with him yet, so dont worry... haha

My now 2 1/2 year old still goes through phases like that. One week he will be very stand-offish, and then the next he doesn't want off my or my husband's lap. Welcome to life with toddlers. LOL
