ok so for the last 2 years i have had cronic rib pain. somehow ive mananged to live with it for the last 2 years. ive reached my limit. i just cant stand it anymore. like noone understands i just dont know what else to do. my mom and i decided that im going to get my GED and be done with highschool. but shes forcing me to continue school until march, which is the closest test date. im just in to much pain to go. no one gets it. "they all say well deal with it, it cant be to bad. but there are times its so bad i feel like im going to throw up. they still dont understand when they see my crying in pain. the only thing that works is strong painkillers. im 16 i shouldnt have to take those.
so pretty much what im asking, is how do i tell my mom that im in to much pain to go to school.even if i go im not going to learn anything.also what can i do about this? ive gone to all the docs, noone knows what to do. one doc suggested a program, but its 6 weeks&full time. so i couldnt attend school

I am so sorry you are going through this. And no, at 16 you should not have to take strong painkillers.
Something else is wrong besides the inflammation in your ribs, you must find another doctor and get some Blood Work done to find out what it is. Also ultrasound. Gall bladder check. Have you been checked for efferent Loop partial obstruction? I had this and the pain would double me up, doctors kept telling me it was a muscle cramp.
I had pain in my back, I saw 5 doctors, they usually said I must have pulled something, or strained my back. They said to take aspirin, use heat, use cold compresses and yes, "Deal with it". I was sitting at the kitchen table with my family and some neighbors, I said, " Mom I just have to find a doctor who will know what this is." My Dad threw a fit, said, don't you think you have seen enough doctors? Everyone thought that the pain was mostly in my head. So sadly I went to work that night. About midnight, I felt as if something had suddenly kicked me in the stomach. My foreman took me to the emergency room. Well it turned out that I had an ulcer in my stomach that had finally eaten it's way through my stomach, and dumped the contents of my stomach into the peritoneum, the abdominal cavity. I had immediate surgery, but I almost died from the peritonitis. The surgeon said I had a hole in my stomach that he could stick his thumb through. He asked, how did you live with the pain?
Well the truth was the pain lasted almost a year, and I still do not know how I lived through it. I know this is not what you have, but I can relate to what you are going through with your parents. Mine throught I just did not want to go to work, yours probably have the idea, that you do not want to go to school.
Tell your Mom, Mothers seem to have more sympathy than fathers, that the pain is so bad. Pick a time, when you can really sit down with her and talk uninterrupted, And you really need to find someone (Doctor) who will start fresh and find out what this is. Pain is always a warning, extreme pain, means pay attention to me now. Doctors are only human, and they do make mistakes. And they do tend to look over your records, and find the easiest answer sometimes. But there has to be a doctor out there who can help you. This might be referred pain, pain from another organ that is showing up under your rib cage.
Please let me know how this turns out, I will be thinking of you.

There could be a lot of reasons for this. Have you had an echogram/ultrasound??? Have you had an MRI or CAT scan? Have you had an x-ray? (probably won't show anything but at least they should do an x-ray!) Costrochondritis is just a fancy way for saying you have rib pain, so that is a ridiculous diagnosis!
You need to be better evaluated and have ALL the above tests. You could also have a simple skeletal problem. See a local Chiropractor who is good with sports medicine (and doesn't recommend more than 8 to 12 treatments). Email me if you have a problem.

Oh Dear! Please do not get disappointed and withdraw from life at this young age. I appreciate your concern. I too had severe back problem in L4L5 positions and ultimately had to undergo surgery. I do not know whether you are aware that in India there is a different system of medicine called Ayurveda, which is a traditional herbal based medicines for all types of deceases. There are good herbal medicines for pains, arthritis etc. I do not know in which part of the world you live. But I am sure you will have some good Indian friends around and you can seek their help to seek consultation and treatment. You can do a web search on Ayurveda to know more about it.You will be alright and God is with you.

oh Hannah I'm very sorry to hear that you are in so much pain.
((((((((((((hugs hugs))))))))))))
I, too, suffer with chronic pain and have for 14 years. It almost interfered with my high school as well back then.
It is SO very important to have a good, solid support system. It is possible that your parents are having a very hard time accepting the fact that you're in pain. No parent wants to see their child in pain.
Have you talked to any counselors at your school? I would suggest that you try, if you haven't already. Perhaps if you explain to them what you're going through both physically/medically and with your parents, they can be of some assistance.
Also, do your teachers know that you're struggling with this pain and problems? It may help to let your teachers know as well.
In a way, I have many questions I would ask you before being able to assist in any way so it's difficult to really answer this.
Some questions I'd be interested in would be...
Which side is this rib pain on? Is it all of your ribs or certain portions? Have you tried checking with some medical online sites for any information that can help you, your parents and doctors diagnose what the problem is? Do your friends support you and/or understand?
Ultimately, I really hope that the doctors find out what is causing this severe pain and begin to treat it so you can get some relief.
Chronic pain is not only debilitating and it is tough to lead a good, quality of life with it but it also affects us mentally and emotionally. I totally understand the weakness, emotionally, that constant and chronic pain can bring. Please try not to get discouraged. There are others out there who do understand what you're going through, do believe you. I believe your parents believe you also, they're just having a hard time coming to terms with it.
I'm sorry I'm not truly answering your question easily. I will certainly say a prayer for you that you get relief and understanding from good support from family, friends and teachers at school as well.
Good luck to you Hannah.

Sometimes doctors say things are stress related and are hesitant to treat patients. I have dealt with chronic back pain for the past 2 years, was on disability for it for 8 months, could barely walk...or do anything. I would say keep trying. Most people cannot understand the pain you are in because there are no physical symptoms that they can see, they only know what you tell them. They cannot feel it themselves. I would try my hardest to hang on, I still work even in immense pain, or maybe consider home school, or something similar....talk to a counselor and find out options.

im sorry that really sucks, im having chest and ribs pains now but thas cuz i have costochondritis. but theres gotta be something wrong wit u, u need to see other doctors so they can run every test on u, there has to be a reason why ur in so much pain. but im sure ur mom will understand why u dont want to go anymore. like u said ur goin to be in too much pain to listen or even try to learn something. but if u drop out of school now, u have to think about wat ur gonna do at home. jus sit around ? then when u r gonna get a job or go to college? u gota think about every aspect of dropping out, and definitely try to see another doctor so ur not limited urself to the education and activities u need to be doing. good luck at finding wats wrong.

There are treatments which could control your pain. They would not require you to miss full days of school, and should allow you to resume a level of functioning that would allow you to complete all but the physical fitness requirements at any high school.
These include traditional, alternative, chiropractic, and psychotherapeutic techniques. Ideally, after you fininsh school, all should be combined in a full time pain program for a short time to include physio therapy.
At 16 you should not need chronic narcotic pain medications, and they should be avoided. There are better methods. But the goal should be to allow you to return to normal activities, not to find you a way to avoid them.
Please try to get referred to a comprehensive, holistic pain program.

let me just point out that you are a very strong person
and I'm proud of how you still managed to go to school with pain
but if it's that bad, you should directly say it to your mom and let her know clearly that this pain of yours is serious
talk to her and come up with a compromise both of you agree.
to me, the best solution to everything is to pray about it
it might sound useless to some people but God's power to heal is amazing
you can't hold all the pain and surffering by yourself, pour out everything to the Lord and he will understand
Ask him to help you and he will answer you
If you want to know more, just contact me
but if i offended you in some way, i apologize
hope things go well
