I have been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. The doctor gave me some celebrex but I never took them because my symptoms went away for a while. But now they're back and my butt has really been hurting. The pills have quite a list of side effects. Should I start taking them? I'm a 19 year old male. If you have taken celebrex, what side effects have you experienced?

Celecoxib or Celebrex is a COX 2 selective Non steroidal antiinflammatory drug. There were three at one time Bextra and Vioxx were removed from the market. Bextra was removed at the US FDAs request and Merck Pharmaceuticals Voluntarily removed Vioxx. Since the removal of these drugs additional warnings have been added to all NSAIDs including ibuprofen and naproxen. All of these drugs have risks. All should be taken with some caution. But the physicians who prescibe these drugs in the first place understand these risks exist. They also understand that in medicine the benefit of the medications in some conditions override the risks. Your other health conditions are taken into account when these medications are prescribed.

If your overall health condition has changed since the medication was prescribed, follow up telephonically or in person with your physician before taking this medication. However, if your overall health is the same, but the spine condition which caused the physician to write the presciption originally has worsened or recurred, then follow your physicians guidelines on the medications. As the condition itself has worsened, a follow up visit is in order.

Celebrex is generally, in my opinion, a safe medication when taken appropriately. I also feel that Bextra and Vioxx were probably also safe, but were taken off the market, due to the desire to avoid litigation. Of course I also feel that paracetamol is the most abused medication available in the world today followed closely by aspirin.

There are physicians who prescribe inappropriately, but if you look at the number of patients in the world and then then number of medication problems, that percentage is actually quite small. While any percentage is too large, you are probably safer taking Celebrex prescribed by your physician, than pain relievers you pick up on your own and self prescribe from the chemist.

none, I have srthritis, and was working a waitress for 8 hrs. a day, I took the celebrex when the weather got cold, I retired in march and haven;t taken any since, I;m thinking of going back to work p/t, in a normal rest. situation, 4-5 hr shifts, but I never had any side effects, I think because someone with heart trouble had a problem, and thats what all the hype was about

I used them they did help with the pain but I stopped taking them they made me feel weird in the body can't quite explain but something was not feeling right, today I don't take any pain medicines because they have to many side effects, you need figure out what the problem truly is and treat it. That medicine will only mask and cover up the pain and its possible it could kill you.

Please do some more research; someone said his uncle died after taking them for two weeks. IMO, these new drugs have not been sufficiently tested and rushed through the FDA approval procedure to expedite the $$$ for the pharmaceutical companies and the doctors. There must be alternative drugs available.

I think that you should go to Ur doctor, and talk it over with them.

Maybe you could ask about any alternative meds, that u could take instead, if they have a long list of side effects.

Good luck.

listen man
I have taken more pain pills than I care to count (all on prescription) because docs cannot figure out why I hurt
out of all of them for ability to get around and pain relief
still leaving you ok to drive I recommend Tylenol 3 or 4

celebrex really did not do it for me

If your pain isn't severe you can. Just use the Celebrex when it's really bad, like I do.
