First of all Pit Bulls are not recognized by the AKC. It's the Amstaff (american staffordshire terrier) You could get papers from the breeder showing his blood line. If you know the dog comes from a show dog line. The AKC might able to get you something but not for pits. That's about it. Lots of time Pits are just bred for a quick buck and it's just wrong. Most breeders can not show you your dogs line. If they can then you found a good one. Or a lot of times the only reason pit breeders have papers is to show the dogs fighting background sadly.

Papers that are worth anything have a PURPOSE - providing a verifiable tracing of the dogs linage. For this reason they must be obtained by the breeder while the pups are small. Now there are "registries" that for a fee will send you a pretty certificate. You can also print a nice one up outta word on your 'puter - which is what the "registry' is doing so one is worth as much as the other.
Better yet micro chip him & register him with NDR or CAR that's in the end worth more that any other option.

If your dog is not registered, and you didn't get papers.. Or if you can't get hold of the breeder and get them to get the papers for you, you cannot register your dog.
