I had one and asked to stay awake, yes wide awake! I had to swallow the tube which was easy as I was hungry, missed my breakfast and dinner! Once inside I felt zero and the Doc did what he had to do. The agreement, I wanted to see my insides, so when he finished, they turned me over and then the Doc started with the pull back. He then stopped and took two biopsies, which felt as if someone had just brushed off your arm, not even a poke, just a brush, but when I saw the blood pouring, I was kinda worried. The magnification is big, so it looked like a Dam, when in fact it was just a scratch. Once out I had the biggest belch in my life?
Most people are literally put out for the count, know nothing, feel nothing, except a bit groggy when they come around. The Doc does the entire thing himself alongside a Nurse and that is it. No its not painful. My only regret, I did not have a Video of the inside of my stomach, because it is not often you get to see your own stomach. Remember this, 'If you THINK you are going to feel something, then under the anesthetic you will continue to THINK you feel something' however the reality you really feel nothing. Do you remember the BELCHING? We all belch because with the tube is air that blows open the way for the tube to travel down smoothly. The worst part for me, all the Nurses wanting to know what it 'felt' like?

I have a problem swallowing and tests have shown I do have spasms causing the problem. I also have had abnormal barium swallows which show there is a problem causing me not to be able to swallow. This has been the case for over fifty years and I just eat as best I can. Now I have to have an endoscopy because I have stomach problems and because I am normally terrified when I swallow that I will chock the thought of an endoscopy is making it so difficult for me to agree to the procedure if I am sedated I am sure because of my history I will really fight any advise out there . I will not be able to swallow the tube myself

Hi - I've had 5 in the past 3 years, and while there are better ways to spend a morning, it's not too bad. The night before, you do have to drink some stuff that will clean out your bowels. And in some procedures it's about 2 quarts. Blah. But it is important that your intestine is clean because when the thin optic wire is inserted in your butt, the doctor needs to see a clean environment inside. I suggest starting a couple of days before, eating easily digested food like protein so you can pass it easily. Yeah, I know the stuff you drink is lousy tasting, but you got to do it. When you get to the doctor's office or hospital, you will be given an enema. Or two. The nurse usually wants to see your bowel movement to see how clean the water is coming out. This is icky, but really no problem. Of course don't eat anything after 8 pm. When you have the colonscopy, you are in the easy part. If you are sedated, like I was, you go in and you wake up in recovery. A couple of hours later, you go home. If you are awake, no problem - it may be a bit uncomfortable but no real pain. Good luck with this - it really is more annoying than anything else and it's the prep that's the most annoying. You'll be OK, don't worry and you and your doctor can make sure everything is OK.

You will be heavily sedated and should not be aware of anything. I have had 4 this year and had no problems with any of them. It's been 5 yrs since your last...medicine has come a long way in that pd. of time.
An IV is started and medication injected thru the IV. If the Dr.sees you struggling more medication is given. It's really not a biggie anymore. You don't even feel anything after the endoscopy....sometimes a scratchy throat but that is rare.
Good luck...You will be fine.

If you're having an endoscopy down your throat, no you will not have to swallow it yourself. You may be asked to swallow once, but the scope will be fed down by the physician performing the procedure. Your throat will be numbed with an analgesic spray so you should not feel much discomfort.

You will be sedated and will be asked to swallow the tube. This helps but isn't entirely necessary.

If you can't swallow the endoscope, it will be lubed well enough that the doc can advance it and his/her own.

About feeling like you were going to die...my condolances. Fortunately the tube will be in your esophagus and not blocking your breathing.

I don't know what happened to you 5 years ago, but I had an endoscopy a few months ago. They put me out, and I don't remember a thing. I swear!!
Tell your doctor about this anxiety, and have him assure you that you will not remember a thing. It sounds like they didn't give you enough anesthesia 5 years ago. That's really unusual. Have them make sure you are OUT!! Good luck, hon. It'll be nothing this time. Mark my words. :)
