It depends on what you mean by lifting heavy. Squats are generally considered the "king of exercises" along with deadlifts because of their sheer intensity and the ability to make people grow, if done correctly and with enough intensity. Not only does it put a tremendous load on the largest muscle group in the body, the intensity of it releases a lot of GH, more so than most other lifts (aside from the deadlift perhaps). Because of that, it even helps your other muscles grow.

Of course, if referring to weight training, lifting heavy is going to build muscle, too. That's really the way to go when lifting weights for hypertrophy. If you can do both, that's all the better.

Diet ultimately determines how much the muscles will grow. Muscles have to have something to build from, so adequate healthy nutrition is paramount.

heavy squats!

hands down the back squat is the single best exercise. no properly designed exercise routine should be with out some form of them

swimming start of slow do different storkes... swimming works every muscle in your body so its the all around best exercise
