There are so many people on Yahoo! Answers asking for advice on how to dress goth for Halloween, like being goth is a joke. I'm sure that there are people asking similar questions about all sorts of groups like emos, geeks, jocks, etc. Isn't it insulting to dress up like a subculture or group that you don't belong to? Is it a joke to them? Every time I see someone ask "how do I be goth for Halloween" I fight the urge to respond "that's funny, I was wondering how to dress like a b*tch for Halloween, can you help me with that?" What do you all think?

Why is everyone insulting me here? Its fine if you think I'm overreacting (I do that sometimes) but several of you have insulted me. For the record, I'm a twenty-something grad student, not a whiny teenager, and I certainly don't think that what you wear has anything to do with the person you are inside. Just the opposite. My question is: Why do people think its funny to perpetuate stereotypes on Halloween?

Not really...in some cases I don't think they are parodying - I believe some are stretching beyond their normal modus operandi and striving to experience a taste of something which intrigues them. When I see guys really getting into dressing up as a woman and going all out, I figure they too want to try out something new and different. So no offense taken really...I feel worse for those who don Hot Topic on a regular basis and think themselves dark and edgy - now that's ignorance!

Frankly, I'm not insulted. When you think about it, they're dressing as "Goths" because it's different. And I mean, being unique enough that they feel a need to idolize us on a holiday is pretty nifty, really.

I know not all Goths go for a shock value, but most of them buy unique items for the sake of looking different, yet looking nice and dark at the same time. So if someone wants to try to imitate the art that is Goth, why not?

I'm actually flattered that us Goths are thought of as unique enough to be a costume. =P

I think you are being oversensitive. It's just a Halloween costume. If everyone got insulted by costumes, there would be none. i.e. fireman, policeman, cheerleader, clown , etc. I could get very insulted by a devil's costume as I am Christian but I know it is just pretend and they are not Satan. You must dress Goth and I would look at that as a compliment instead of something negative. Happy Halloween!

halloween is all about being something you're not. it's not a big deal at all, and as for being goth...maybe when someone explains exactly what that actually means besides claiming to be "individual" by dressing in black and dying hair and piercings and all that keeps hot topic in business like a zillion other teens going through a phase...then maybe i'll see why you'd be offended.

It's Halloween for crying out loud. The Goth look and Halloween to go together. People like to dress up as pirates too but that don't mean they have even the slightest inkling of what it meant or took to survive as one. Lighten up.

I think you need to relax and not overanalyze things so much. Nobody thinks that much about it really--they just want to dress up like something different than what/who they are.

Now, if you are a bona fide goth and people are asking you for your expert opinion you can either get all defensive and cuss them out, or you can steer them the wrong way and have your own last laugh, or you can tell them what might make them look "goth-like" but maybe explain your feelings if you feel like they would listen and understand your point of view.

Life is too short to get uptight about stuff like this...

I find it silly how mass marketed goth has become but It'd be hard for me to get worked up enough to feel insulted. Unless you've got the patent you took the style from somone else too.

In the words of King Missile:

"I want to be differant, just like everybody else I want to be like. I want to be just like all the differant people"

If somone wants to dress like me for halloween I'll be stoked.

Too intense! It's just for Halloween...And they will dress up in many other ways also.. Have some fun...Life's too short to get bent out of shape over the small things...Happy Halloween!

No offense but I think dressing "goth" for halloween is dumb. Look up Gothic and see what it really means. Totally agree with you on this.
