Haunting ghosts are guys like me when we die. I'll come around and play tricks on you, play with your mind, cause you to be attracted to me in some weird way, you know... fun stuff!

Haunthing Ghosts are probably just angry spirits.
I believe that before we were born, we were all spirits. I think we had a gigantic battle. It was over who we would follow, Satan or Christ. Then Satan lost and all his followers were banished and were not allowed to gain bodies and live on the earth as mortals. So that would be a pretty darn good reason to be angry right?
I think haunting ghosts/spirits don't do it to show off. They do it out of anger and revenge... which is why it can be scary. I think it is completely possible though that they do show off. They may take pleasure in freakin' people out.
I certainly believe in spirits. My great aunt has one in her house. You can hear footsteps and doors opening a closing... and the occasional breathing. It's not scary because the spirit does no harm nor does it try to be loud.
I think that this is a question that really can't be answered well enough. Maybe it would be easier if you talked to someone who "spoke" with the . I dunno I don't really believe in THAT but hey... whatever works right?

I think most "haunting ghosts" don't realize that they're dead.

No evidence from Scripture that ghosts have anything to do with dead - but some suggestion they have something to do with evil powers.
