The kid needs to be taught about how to approach a dog. Grabbing a collar, especially of an older (sore) dog is provoking it. Just keep better control of the dog and do not let anyone handle her that she doesn't know well.

Keep him away from kids. He is old and if he is senile and deaf , he does'nt know any better and while he might still have some life left and no reason to put him down if he is not suffering, don't subject anyone but yourself and people that you feel can handle him to him at this point. He needs the same people around him and very gentle treatment.

The child did not appear to be doing anything wrong by grabbing the dog's collar to keep it from running away and getting hurt. I don't know why some of the other people answering seem to think that the dog was being teased because it sounds like he wasn't. If the dog didn't inflict any sort of serious harm, I think everything will be all right. The child probably knew the dog would nip but decided to take the chance anyway.

Alot of toy poodles turn like that when they get old. You just need to keep him with her at all times. He got scared so he bit the kid. Imagine being deaf and blind and feeling threatened....you would come out fighting.

Grabbing an unknown dog by the collar, is risking even the nicest dog to get nippy. Don't worry about that.
Have your mom invest in a baby gate to prevent the dog from getting out the front door, that way she doesn't have to worry about whether the dog is getting moody with neighborhood children or not.
He's just getting old, that's not a reason to put him to sleep.

Ok, so he can't see, and he can't hear and out of nowhere (so far as he can tell) some stranger grabs him? And you're surprised he tried to defend himself?
Did he break the skin? If not, I wouldn't really be concerned. He's a toy poodle! And it's not like he went out and maliciously sought someone to attack.
Try to keep a better eye on him, but he certainly wasn't at fault for what happened.

I am thinking that your dog was just startled and reacted defensively. If he has never done this before in ten years of life, I wouldnt worry overly much about it. You may want to keep a closer watch on him though, if his hearing and his sight are going, it could be very dangerous for him to be on the loose. I hope you have lots of years left with this fiesty little guy!

Just keep an eye on him, imagine how you would feel if you couldn't see, or hear what was going on very well and somebody grabbed you by the neck!

The problem is the kid not the dog. What would you do if a kid was poking at you? Protect the dog. At its age, it deserves to be respected. The kid needs to learn boundries.
