I have 4 daughters. In the 8th grade two of them were still very child-like. The oldest and the youngest are and were very mature.
My 13 year old acts older than her 16 & 18 year old sisters.
So, I guess my answer is.....it depends on the maturity level of the teen.

My daughter was 13 at the beginning of 8th grade and 14 at the end of 8th grade. So she was a teenager, but she wasn't allowed to do things that older teenagers who are in high school are allowed to do. I considered her a young teenager, but still older than an 11 or 12 year old. I got her a cell phone when she was 13 and gave her some more freedom than she had had earlier, but not as much as she has now that she is in high school and is about to start driving.

I think it depends on the maturity level of the child. I mean if you have a 14 year old in eighth grade, you'd assume they are mature, right? Not necessarily! You can still act like a five year old. But on an average scale, I would have to say anywhere between 13-15!

Typical 8th grader is much more of a child than an adult due to a lack of experience. But you asked more of a child or a teenager, so I would say clearly a teenager.

This I think is an age were it varies on the child. I have 2 nephews, one in 8th grade who still acts more as a child. He has his Pokemon cards still, plays video games and is quite innocent. Then I have a nephew in 9th who just spent a year in juvenile detention, has has sex, drinks (positive note not to bring the kid totally down all honors and will be starting college level classes next year)

the brain doesnt fully develop until the age of 21...i think you are still considered not mature enough until that age or after. as far as being a teenager, i would say once they hit high school theres a certain new level of maturity required thats different from middle school.

Sometimes age doesn't equal maturity, actions equal maturity, there are some adults that act more immature than teens, there are some teens that act more mature then adults, etc. Actions speak louder than words or a number.

I don't consider chronological age when I consider who is a child...I know 30 year olds who are children.
