I'm supposed to write an essay on a controversial subject in medicine and it has to involve a drug (may or may not be the main point of the essay). Does anyone have any suggestion? Nothing on Vioxx, HIV vaccination (although those are very good subjects) Thank you!

Plan B is quite controversial. Plenty to talk about there - especially since it's thought to work by preventing the implantation of the embryo in the womb. Should this be considered abortion?
Accutane is also a good one... used to treat a non-fatal disorder (acne) but is VERY teratogenic. Is it appropriate to treat acne with a drug that can kill an unborn infant if the patient gets pregnant? How much should the manufacturer be required to do to make sure patients are aware of this?
Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) is a very good decongestant that's licensed for over the counter use in the US but it's closely related to methamphetamine - just 2-3 chemical steps to go from one to the other. How restricted should pseudoephedrine be?

try the use of nicotine aiding in healing processes and slowing the progress of certain medical ailments and mental disorders. so many are against nicotine that they don't want to believe it can have any beneficial qualities. even classing it as a drug is controversial.
