It is his way to test our faith. He wants all of us to love him more and more, even in the deepest and saddest moments of our lives. So suffering are a way to stay faithful to god and also to turn to God, because a lot of people pray to God only when they realize that they are nothing without the grace of God. And sufferings make them realize that.

The world is suports many harsh situations. And as a result, many people have asked the question: Why does God allow innocent people to suffer? It's a legitimate questions because more and more people are being affected by violent crime, corruption, genocide, personal tragedy, and so forth.
Experience shows that when innocent people suffer evil without getting an explanation about the cause, they sometimes become embittered. Here is where the Bible can help, for it explains why innocent people are subjected to wickedness and suffering.
When Jehovah God created the earth and everything on it, he did not intend that humankind be troubled by wickedness and suffering. How can we be sure? Because upon completing his creation, “God saw everything he had made and, look! it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31) Ask yourself, ‘If I were to observe something wicked, would I pronounce it “very good”?’ Of course not! In the same way, when God pronounced everything “very good,” there was no trace of wickedness on earth. So when and how did wickedness start?
Shortly after the creation of our first parents, Adam and Eve, a powerful spirit creature approached the woman and challenged Jehovah’s truthfulness and the rightfulness of his sovereignty. (Genesis 3:1-5) This creature, Satan the Devil, later alleged that humans would not stay loyal to God under adversity. (Job 2:1-5) How did Jehovah react to this situation? He allowed for the passing of time so that it would become evident that humans cannot successfully direct their steps independent of him. (Jeremiah 10:23) When creatures act contrary to God’s laws and principles, the result is sin, which produces injurious conditions. (Ecclesiastes 8:9; 1 John 3:4) Despite these adverse circumstances, however, Jehovah knew that some humans would maintain integrity to him.
Since that woeful rebellion in Eden, some 6,000 years have elapsed. Is that too long? Jehovah could have destroyed Satan and his supporters centuries ago. But has it not been better to wait until every conceivable doubt about the rightness of Jehovah’s sovereignty and the integrity of humans to him is dispelled? Is it not true of present judicial systems that a court case to prove who is right and who is wrong may take years?
In view of the importance of the issues facing Jehovah and mankind—universal sovereignty and the integrity of humans—how wise it was of God to allow for time to pass! Now we see clearly what happens when humans ignore God’s laws and take charge of their own affairs. The result is widespread evil. And that is why so many innocent people suffer today.
Happily, though, God’s Word indicates that wickedness will not last forever. In fact, Jehovah will soon put an end to evil and to those who cause it. “As regards the wicked,” says Proverbs 2:22, “they will be cut off from the very earth; and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it.” On the other hand, those faithful to God can look forward to a time, now near at hand, when “death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.”—Revelation 21:4.
So, then, the Bible clearly explains why the innocent suffer. It also assures us that evil and suffering will soon end.

God allows us to suffer because the alternative, living in a sufferingless world, would not be good for us, despite what we think, and God only wills what is good for us.
Parents know this as well. We don't necessarily WANT our children to suffer, but we allow them to engage in activities that we know will inevitably result in some kind of suffering eventually -- such as playing sports (where the risk of injuries is real), driving cars (where the risk of death is real), dating members of the opposite sex (where the risk of a broken heart is real). Why do we do this? The answer is that the risk and/or reality of suffering is better than the alternative -- keeping our children in a cocoon where they cannot play sports, drive cars or date members of the opposite sex.
That is my answer: The world is a dangerous place where all sorts of bad things can happen... but the alternative, a sterile "heaven" without risk or adventure or hope or fear, would be far worse.

Because there is sin in the world. God allows things in our lives to train us in this life. Also, bad things happen because we are all sinners and we choose the wrong road sometimes. That road effects many people...not just the ones who did the choosing. However....the person who suffered the most was God's son Jesus Christ..for he was sinless and yet died and shed his blood for the whole world.
Heb 9:22 ... and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
We owed a debt we could not pay.
Jesus paid a debt he did not owe.

He doesn't allow us to suffer. We attract sufferings to ourselves through our own stubbornness. We are made simple and ignorant and we need to learn, enlarge our intelligence and knowledge through several lives. However, we do a lot of things wrong and many times we insist on the mistake, then we have to face suffering so that we learn. It's the same thing we do to our children, think about it. When my little daughter does something I don't approve, I put her in time out. If my older daughter does something I don't approve, I double her chores in the house or something like that. You said it right, we are God's "children" and he also gives us time-outs and put us under restriction when we fail to obey Him, but He loves us and wants us the best, as much as we do concerning our children.
Peace!

We are God's children and He loves us, true. But God isn't the one who allow people to suffer, it's the poor choices that we make that we suffer the consequences. If things aren't going your way, it's simply a test of our faith.
Don't confuse God from being a punisher. God is a God of love and understanding. I'm pretty sure He guided you in so many ways before bad things happened in to your life, it's just that we are too stubborn to listen.

Nope, He does not allow us, but we do it anyway....:).
Come on brother, you know He gave us the choice of good or bad. If we choose bad we suffer and if we choose good we are happy. You have not got doubts about this, do you?
At the moment we also have the third choice and that is to be blissful - that is beyond happyness of sorrow. Happiness or sorrow have reasons, but bliss has no reasons. Bliss is just the quality of the soul. The soul just is and so bliss too just is. So now we have the possibility of experiencing bliss even while alive (in the body) and not only after leaving the body. Also by experiencing bliss SOME can also catch such vibrations and their sorrow will be removed accordingly. This is charity and by doing this type of charity now, later on we will be worshiped as removers of sorrow and others may even confuse us with God who is - The Remover of Sorrow for ALL.

The fact that there is good and evil. Salvation is not given to just anyone... I believe that inorder to have this, your faith was even put to a test. God wants to know, how much you will stay for Him to know if you really love Him.
Sometimes it's a punishment for whatever we have done, so we can know what are the things that we have done that made Him or other people mad.
Sometimes, its also a silent whisper to remind you, that He was just there to help, waiting for your call.
Sometimes, He wants to teach you something. Because we all learned by our experiences. And He is the one who should guide you and lead you to your daily tasks.
Sometimes it is His way of showing He loves you, that when you are in grief, He is your strength and He loves you.
I think, If we don't suffer, we won't be needing God anymore. You won't even search for Him cause you can even live by your own.
So many bible verses to mention that proves what I say.

What we define as suffering is nothing compared to the price Jesus paid by being beat and crusified, and he was the son of God. What you have to remember is that all things happen for a reason. We may not understand that reason, but it isn't meant for us to understand. To follow direction without understanding is the defintion of Faith. The "suffering" that we have to endure is the daily test of our faith. When we "suffer" and we still do not waiver from our faith, but continue to believe that God will somehow provide a way out for us, That is how we prove our faith and worthiness to God. If you need an example, think of the story of Job. If you don't know it, you should read it or ask someone who does know it to explain it to you, it is a great lesson.
