I have Tardive Dyskinesia and I'd like to know how others cope with it. I usually take Xanax to relieve the stress of TD, I brush my teeth too..may seem weird, but it calms me down.

If you don't know what what Tardive Dyskinesia is, please do not offer an answer. It's a neurological syndrome caused by the long-term use of neuroleptic drugs or anti-psychotic meds. In my case, it was the use of Abilify for three years. Right now there is no standard treatment for tardive dyskinesia.

So, if you suffer from this side effect, how do you cope with it?

I have had Tardive Diskinesia for over 30 years. It came about from taking the neuroleptic medication Sertraline for years. I still take Risperidone but it does not have this effect it seems. As you say there is no cure for it. It is due to permanent nerve damage. I chew constantly and have virtually lost the effective use of my right arm due to Parkinson like tremors. The symptoms have not increased with the years I've been on Risperidone. I just live with it.

Good luck with your coping, good mental health, peace and Love!

It is unusual for a person to get tardive dyskinesia from one dose of thorazine. It is also unusual that they would tell you it is tardive because that term describes the variant of this condition that does not go away after you stop taking the medication. It happens though if the dose of thorazine is really high and you are susceptible to this disorder. There are people who take thorazine everyday for years and only get minor tics. The best the doctors can tell you is that it is sometimes permanent and sometimes not. No one can tell other than watching it to see if it goes away. However long it lasts, it can be treated with drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease. I agree that you should go to the doctor. I don't have tardive dyskinesia, I have a similar movement disorder that is also caused by antipsychotic drugs and they give me regular old benedryl 3 times a day.
