I'M TRYING TO WORK WITH HER AT HOME BUT SHE JUST CAN'T SIT LONG ENOUGH TO DO ANYTHING AND AT THE SAME TIME SHE'S GOOFING OFF WITH HER BROTHERS. Shes bored in school, so many kids are misdiagnosed with ADHD and ADD. Don't force her to take pills. I took pills from 3rd grade to 10th when I was finally given a choise to be on them or off them. I resent my parents for forceing me to take them all that time.
If shes paying atention for part thrn not its because she was intrested in what was going on then the subject got changed and shes not intrested, she is probably more of a hands on learner that a listening learner.

Hi there,
As a mum of 2 with ADHD and a suffer of it too, I can say that the best way is to go to your Doctor and ask for a referral to a specialist who deals with ADHD children. Not all Doctors do or know what they are looking at. I had one specialist tell me that ADHD didn't exist.

There is a great book called Understanding ADHD by Dr Christopher Green, link below. Well worth the read. It not only helps you to work out if your child has this but also strategies to cope with the behaviours that you may be getting. These are great even for children who do not have the condition.

For every 8 boys diagnosed only 1 girl is. Not because they don't have it but because people just think tom boy or that she is playing just like the boys and goes unoticed. But if a boy is over the top with his behaviours, then that is noticed.

Join some on-line groups for ADHD, there are a lot of them. It is good to know that you are not alone in this.

As for the best treatment for your family, well that is a personal thing that only you have the right to decide or comment on. Don't listen to those who would tell you that you are doing the wrong thing. They do not know and probably never will.

Personally I tried everything, diet & exercise, behaviour modification and finally to the medications. I kept a food diary for a month. Noting what was eaten when and reaction to the food, that is bad or normal behaviours for the next hour. I could have kicked myself for having waited so long to try the meds when I saw how quickly they improved the life of my eldset son. So when my daughter was diagnosed, I didn't hesitate. Their lives are so much better now. It is not just the meds alone but the whole stratigy that we use.

Sorry I can not be of more help. But maybe the links and knowing your not alone will.

I totally know where you are coming from when you say you have had problems with her ever since she was a baby.
I have a six year old in which we are going through a similar situation with. From day one he was never quite right. Always unsettled and crying mind you he did have severe reflux which did not help. He was (still is) from a very young age fascinated by numbers and counting things and putting all his toys in lines and piles etc. He in one minute is a very happy boy and then just snaps and becomes very aggressive for no obvious reason. He has no attention span at least at home that is, it is very hard to get him interested in things and always fidgeting. He is though extremely smart. Top of his class. The paediatrician that treats him said he has traits of ADHD along with traits of many other things so it is not cut and dry. We knew like I said from day 1 things were not quite right and we are only now getting somewhere with the right treatment. He is on ADHD medication which has helped somewhat but it has been through trial of other things first before we made the decision to give this ago. Get a referral to a paediatrician and see what they have to say you. I so believe to many children are labelled with ADHD for the wrong reasons. It was a very difficult thing for us to decide to try the medication track but for us it helps him live a better life.

Wow I am going to try to keep this short... Your pedi will MAYBE give them an evaluation for adhd or say she'll grow out of it. My sister in Law has a daughter that is ADHD but she refused to put her on meds. Please read up on those meds 'cos once they get use to those meds they don't know how to live w/o them (sometimes). Anyway my SIL read that if you modify their diet no additives and preservatives or food colourings this would make a big difference... she's been doing this for over 6 mos and MAN what a big difference she has made... Her mother (my MIL) will try and sneak a 'treat' in every once and a while but you instantly see she becomes like the HULK/Speedy Gonzales. It is definitely a food factor that makes her aggressive and inattentive. You should really try that.

ADHD can only be diagnosed accurately by a neurologist. Go to your family doctor and have him or her give you a referral to the neurologist. She does sound a bit like she does. I have a nephew who is ADHD. I once read an excellent article on ADD and ADHD in the Sacramento Bee newspaper. It was around 8 to 10 years ago, and it was more than one page long. Search their archives for it.

talk to your doctor. tell them your concerns and they can either help you with the diagnosis, or can refer you to a psychiatrist. when our primary doc sent us to our psych, it was the best thing in the world! our daughter is 4 1/2 and is very adHd! she has male pattern adhd, which appears when they are younger, but tends to improve as they get older...as opposed to typical female pattern adhd which usually don't manifest until puberty, then just gets worse.

it's definitely worth checking into. we're on a regimen of medication and therapy. it helps! and don't let anyone make you feel bad for seeking help. you're not a bad parent, you just need extra help with this one.

Please go here: http://www.adhdnews.com/ it's free to join and the message boards are awesome. It's helped me ALOT. You'll also see you're not alone. It's good that you're reaching out for help with her now...rather than later. IF she has ADHD/ADD please know that it's NOTHING that YOU did or have done. (kids are born with this). I believe kids actually can outgrow this behavior with lots of structure.
I wish you the best.
