I am writing an essay on the representation of queer sexualities in the media, and how they feature in aiding the process of hetero-normativity and capitalist consumerism.

I must make reference to the representation of 'queerness' on Australian television.

So far I have thought of Queer Eye for the Straight guy (which is also screened in Australia) and Big Brother characters.

Can anyone think of any others, and if so, do you know where I could access them (websites, common video store etc.)

Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

Yeah, possibly the show "The Block" on Channel 9 hosted by Jamie Durie. It was a reality tv show where 4 couples have to live in a run down building with four appartments in it and renovate them until they look all trendy and modern and then sell them. Then the appartments go to auction once they are done up and whichever couple's appartment that sells for the highest price then wins $100 000 and gets to keep a the Rav-4 that was given to each couple at the beginning of the series as their form of transportation.

The show isn't on anymore and only ran for two seasons...but it was by far the best reality show on tv (simply because it was the only one I ever watched and enjoyed...It was so much better than Big Brother).

I'm not sure if it was part of the series contract, but so far both series have had three heterosexual couples and one homosexual couple as part of the "contestants".

The first series had "Gav and Waz" (Gavin and Warren) who both had somewhat of a celebrity status in Australian television for a short period, and one of them (i can't remember which one) had a really hilarious laugh!

The second series had Richard and Steven, but they weren't nearly as likeable as Gav and Waz because they managed to create a bit of tension and a few friendship rifts during the show.

Here's a Wikipedia link, which has links to the official "The Block" website on the bottom of it.

The first positive gay characters on Australian TV were in Number 96 in the 1970s and then The Box. Since then there have been many programs with gay characters including Certain Women and GP on the ABC. Imported programs include Little Britain, Shameless, Queer as Folk (both the British and American versions), The Bill and the new series of Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood.

These days any program claiming to represent a cross section of people will include gay characters. At one stage they were always negatively portrayed but they are mainly poitively done today.
