I need to rent a U-Haul trailer to move a family dining room set 1200 miles. They seem to be the only company which rents moving trailers. One of their smaller ones behind my my Caravan should be just fine. I already have the 3500 lb hitch. Checking their website for some basic information, they mention several times that the maximum recommended speed is 45 mph ! I would think that speed would actually be dangerous by being too slow on major highways. Are they serious or just covering their butts ? Have you ever rented one? Did you travel at highway speeds of say 60 mph or more? Any other comments?

They are just trying to cover themselves for liability.

I HAVE USED THERE TRAILERS SEVERAL TIMES , AND THEY ARE SAFE AT MUCH HIGHER SPEEDS THAN 45 MPH . WHAT MAKES THERE'S SO GOOD IS THE BRAKES ARE ACTIVATED BY THE MASTER CYLINDER MOUNTED ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE HITCH . AS YOU PUT ON YOUR BRAKES THE WEIGHT OF THE TRAILER PUSHING AGAINST THE HITCH COMPRESSES THE SPRING , AND A ROD APPLIES PRESSURE TO THE MASTER CYLINDER THAT IN TURN SENDS THE FLUID TO THE WHEEL CYLINDERS APPLYINY THE BRAKES AND SLOWS THE TRAILER DOWN . AS FAR AS STOPPING GOES YOU WON'T EVEN NOTICE THE TRAILER WEIGHT , SOME DAY I'LL PUT THAT TYPE OF BRAKES ON MY PERSONAL OWNED TRAILER. THE BIGGEST THING ABOUT PULLING ONE IS NO FAST LANE CHANGES OR OTHER SILLINESS OUT ON THE ROAD , ONE MISTAKE AND YOU COULD TOTAL OUT OR WORSE . I PULL A 10 X 5 CARGO 10,000 - 12,000 MILES A YEAR , AND AT TIMES AS HIGH AS 80 MPH . ( TEXAS HAD 80 MPH ON INTERSTATES IN THE OPEN AREAS A YEAR AGO ) YOUR BEST GAS MILEAGE WILL BE AROUND 55 - 60 MPH . BE CAREFUL AND YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD TRIP .

It is to cover their butts. I've pulled several. Ryder was the last type I've used. They said the same thing, but to tow a 84 full size pick-up on a car trailer, I had to rent a moving truck too. They had a governor on the engine for it set at about 58-60 MPH.
