When the ambulance is behind you in the traffic, the word appears normal on your rearview mirror and you can safely give right of way to the ambulance.

The word AMBULANCE is usually written in reverse on the front of the vehicle. But if you look thru the rear view mirror from your car, it will read correctly. It is for the convenient the driver of the vehicle in front to read so he/she would give way.

They got it right! Flipped order of the word AMBULANCE on front is a TIME SAVING STRATEGY and A LIFE SAVER!
The word ambulance is written backwards on the front of any ambulance so that the drivers of the vehicles in front who look in their rear view mirror will see the word AMBULANCE legible and in correct ORDER without turning their heads back to look at it.
Ambulance always signify an emergency situation that every single second is so precious. It needs to hurry to reach its destination. It needs its path to be cleared of any traffic jams. Those vehicles in front must clearly "identify" what is behind them without wasting a second to look back for verification." Writing the word in a flipped order quickly conveys its presence to the other drivers of the vehicles ahead.
By that way, the AMBULANCE can pass through without a second wasted. And it is much helpful in keeping traffic safety. (Drivers turning his/her head back on a busy traffic are proned to unexpected accidents, don't they?)

So you can read it in your rear view mirror and know it is an ambulance. A mirror would reverse the image.

Not really sure what you mean by reverse, but I suppose if you were on the inside and say it its because the letters have to be backwards from your view to look normal to people outside.
