It could be from a variety of causes. This nurse strongly urges you to see your doctor to have this pain evaluated. The only way to get a handle on it is to get the facts, then you know just what you're dealing with and makes it easier to manage.

Honey, you are too young to have a heart problem. But, I still wouldn't rule this out. Is the pain deep? When do you experience the pain? What time of the day? Is there any event that precedes the pain? Are you usually anxious? Sometimes, its not really from the heart that the pain comes from. It could just be a heartburn. This is the return of the stomach contents back into the esophagus because of some irritation or by stomach acid. The pain is characterized by a vague scalding or burning sensation felt behind the sternum (breastbone - middle of chest) usually associated with acid regurgitation after eating. If the pain doesn't cause you to pass out, then it couldn't be coming from the heart. Heart problems usually escalates to worse conditions. It doesn't take hours for this to happen. Since you are 17 and are in college, the stress could be getting to you. This could also bring heartburns. So try to relax and pay attention to your breathing. Worrying could just worsen your anxiety.

It might be heartburn sometimes that is how I feel when I get heartburn. I didn't know what it was before so I ended up going to the hospital and they gave me some medicine for it and told me to take prevacid otc and it really works. You could also try some antacids.

Sounds like you've got a pinched nerve in your spine, between your shoulder blades, but it could be a lot more serious. You should go see your doctor for any chest pain.
