I think that would have to be the English that landed on plymouth rock. They did it right. They came as foreigners, made friends with the indians, learned their skills and how to survive. They set the very foundation for which this country was and should be based upon. . . People working together.

When the Constitutional Congress convened, there existed only TWO institutions of written law considered to be above any individual: The law of Moses and British law post-Magna Carta.
All immigrants have contributed things we'd about die if forced to live without for even a day. But none would be secure if the U.S. constitution ever allowed the whim of a single living person to usurp the collective dignity of us all.
Illegals threaten to usurp that dignity - not as an individual, but - as a group empowered by a conflicting language and culture. But the death of our dignity is still the same.
Beyond that, I have to say that Native Americans, Irish and African, Chinese and Indian, German, ... (oh crud, they're all GREAT!!!!).
Every last law-lovin' contributor is a hero in my book.

In general....not to offend....I'd have to say the Irish.
Lets think of it.....the REAL moment that America was an appeal and had a melting pot of immigrants, they came from everywhere. They set up little communities like little italy, little france, etc... and in time..........the melting began. People started crossing each others lines and thus the "melting pot" idea...which originated in terminology due to a play.
But looking back, it was the irish whom where always the down-trodden. They were not thought of very highly and were use to a work ethic of working hard and making an earnest living. They dealt with the hard times as best they could and survived.
America has had its trouble to say the least with Germany, so german immigrants although contributing their part to our countries make up weren't at all favored. The general make up of french, swiss, etc didn't have as large of an immigration number as the Irish, therefore less in making a mark on the country. Oriental labor camps indeed helped in building the railroads and local dirty work business so I might award them 2nd place, but it seems the good old can do spirit, the spirit to deal with hardships and get the job done seems to come from the Irish so that's my top pick atm.
There are many contibutors, but many have few examples of actually doing something significant time and time again for America to grow and become the super power it is today.
The native americans helped the initial pilgrims to survive winters as well as the windtalkers of World war 2 but those were sporadic performance considering it wasn't a united effort, only one tribe in each case. It helped America...but wasn't the backbone of it.
Some would argue mexico, but lets face it. Long ago they followed the crops to do farm work, they have branched off more than just plain labor when you go forward to now days. But the Barrosa act showed that the American economy could survive just fine without them. More recently, when a walk out on work was done not only encluding illegal immigrants from Mexico but also activists and supporters, it resulted in nothing but nation wide easing of the traffic. We still didn't shut down.
Now please understand, This isn't a rail against anyone or any nationality, but when you ask for the "most important group" , I look at those that didn't cause problems for America and contributed significantly to shape the nation we are today. Those that didn't contribute regularly, or contributed but did as much harm as good, or couldn't speak the language and added tensions or gave rise to conflict in America. All have contributed, and perhaps contributed significantly. But without the old American can do spirit and hard work ethic which many would say is waning now days, America wouldn't be the country it is and gotten so much done.
I didn't mention Africa because first its a touchy issue, and they did contribute alot of labor in the southern plantations, but that didn't effect the northern industrialization. Alot of the country was divided in the civil war based on belief systems, It was a necessary change for America to understand that all men (and women) are created equal... Slavery as it was shouldn't have existed, and that was a lesson they needed to understand, but it also caused alot of turmoil, diverted attention to the country as a whole and due to a slacker president after Lincoln, even though the war was won by the north, nothing changed immediately and continued for a while the same way. Due to the upheaval of the country during this time, the country was changing...and for the better, but the contribution was mixed at best and destroyed much.
Sorry, do not know of any significan't contributions by eskimo's

I vote for the Irish too. Probably nearly a third of the population of the US has some Irish blood. They are they ultimate melting pot folk.
Also they are the most fun. Does anyone celebrate St. George's day? Not many, but everyone enjoys March 17th.
