I think that your question should have probably been asked in the Philosophy forum as this and/or similar questions have been asked by philosophers countless times throughout history. But to answer your question would really depend on where and who was going to be there. If there was peace from that day forth, I think that life would get kind of boring and our civilization would grow stagnant. Not that I like war and conflict, even though my job deals with it, but I think they have shaped our lives and brought more benefits than most people realize.

Stop a Nuke LOL
As a former Army Missile Crewman and Launch team member with the Pershing Missile system in Germany I can say several things here, First and foremost you have no idea how close and how often we have been near an all out nuclear war. Those things are never in the paper or on the news... With some research you will find some examples caused by computer errors and such.
With that said and having been in the position where I had a key and literally stood within 2 minutes of launch. (All we needed was verification that it was a go from a higher headquarters) I believe the question is one that cannot be answered. You have all kinds of thoughts racing through your head when in that position.... Would I have launched? I say yes but the answer could have very well been no when it was time....The real question is Could you live with yourself after it was done? I still have sleepless nights and wake up in cold sweats just knowing that there now is someone I do not know doing the same things I just described.... Somewhere... Is Peace worth it? And will it bring Peace? those are two questions a nuke cannot be the answer for....Simply put Nuclear weapons are the ultimate killer of peace either way.... If you would like to discuss it with me I have Yahoo messenger with the same name...

The nukes in Japan didn't set peace in 1945. No bomb ever did that. Tiny Vietnam was bombed with more explosives, then all nations combined used in WW2 and nothing was achieved. Germany was totally destroyed by bombs and still fought for a year with 6 Million soldiers against 60 Million allies.
After the 60's, the whole world got smart enough to know, that nuclear fall out will be carried around the globe and everybody suffers. That's why there are no more test allowed, not even underground. The entire world would unite against anybody trying to pull a fast one, even the USA

If we fight a war and win it with H-bombs, what history will remember is not the ideals we were fighting for but the methods we used to accomplish them. These methods will be compared to the warfare of Genghis Khan who ruthlessly killed every last inhabitant of Persia
- Hans Albrecht Bethe
I'm assuming you mean in a state of war; detonating one during peacetime is more likely to be considered a "war crime"

Stop the bomb. Killing possibly thousands or more people with the thinking this will set forth peace is wrong. Remember Hiroshima?????????
