I'm very upset. My dog is my best friend. She is a 8 1/2 year old female and she is a chocolate lab. She's really big like 80 pounds. We got her when she was a puppy (like 1 year old or somewhere around that). She always growls at me and other people. My stepdad always yells at her and he thinks that solves it. It's not working! I'm very upset and I want my dog to change her behavior. Any tips please!?

I strongly urge you to ask this question on that list that I've linked to, below. As you can see, the 'advice' here is extremely uneven and, at times, dangerous. Do not use a shake can, do not shout at her. Thanks.
Your #1 job right now is to stop your stepdad from yelling at her. That's been going on for - how long? - and that yelling has clearly not solved the problem, so please be sure that it does not happen again.
Can you hire a behaviorist, or at least, a positive trainer?

You just got to show the dog who is the master. I have a 10 1/2 year old Siberian Husky, Lobo, and he does not listen to anyone else but me. Lobo does not growl at me. In fact, Lobo knows better because he knows that I'll go after him in a heart beat. The only thing I have to do is fold my arms up and give him a mean look. Lobo will fold his ears back and look at me like he wants to cry. I never laid a hand on him and never had too, either.
My suggestion is for you to tell your stepdad to "Please, quit yelling at the dog because it is not helping matters any" and in the mean time be firm with her but don't over do it either. You will eventually earn the dog's respect. Lobo is living proof.

I read in a dog behaviour book that growling does not necessarily mean that the dog is being aggressive, and barking just means the dog is insecure. Try to be more understanding to the dog and don't feel afraid or sad when handling the dog cos she can read your feelings. Yes yelling at the dog never solves anything. Treat your dog when she does something right, and praise her well for it. Tell her a firm 'QUIET' or 'NO' when she starts growling or barking excessively. Hope this helps!

Get a can and put something in it to make it rattle. When she growls, shake the can and tell her "no" in a firm tone of voice. At 8 1/2 years old, why have you allowed this to go on? Also, it may be a symptom that she is in discomfort or being agitated by some one. Check both of those issues out.

Aww cute dog! My mom has a Black lab and we got him when he was a puppy and he is like 4 years old now and he just started doing the same thing kinda... Except he dont growl for no reason, He growls when we like hug him or something like that. He has never snapped or been mean he just growls when we do that. Weird

you need to get ur dad to stop yelling at her.. my brother comes over sometiems and he would yell at my dog so it started growlign at everyone.. you should treat it nicely but not let it push u around dont show fear but dont bne afgressive
