I mean as far as how they affect the brain and influence one's ability to function.

They are supposed to be two completely different things.

I think they are related; but that's just an opinion.

I work for a mental health agency and we have a lot of clients who are diagnosed with both Bipolar and ADHD. I wonder how they can tell which is which? Honestly--how can you tell "hyperactive" from "manic?"

Also, sometimes they use the same medications to treat both disorders.

ADHD is more typically diagnosed in childhood, and Bipolar in adulthood, but more and more children seem to be diagnosed with Bipolar in the last few years.
