My son is going to graduate from college (in May) and wants to get his license taken care of now since he will have some free time. However, he does not actually need to drive (and will not be doing any driving until he gets ready to move out), and neither of us want to pay for the insurance rates right now. Will just him having a license cause the insurance to go up even if he does not drive and does not need to be insured? Thanks for your time!

I believe that most insurance companies will require that he be on your insurance policy if he lives at home and has his license. It may be possible to exclude him from the policy, but you will need to check with your agent and get this verified.

I know when my kids got their license, that the insurance hit the roof.

good luck.

Yes. If he's got a license, he's presumed to be driving.

If you don't want to pay the higher rates, don't get the license.

YOU WILL HAVE TO CONTACT THE INSURANCE COMPANY ANYWAY FOR YOUR PROTECTION.

AS FOR YOUR RATES GOING UP, YOU CAN SIGN THE PAPERWORK THAT THE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL HAVE THAT STATES THAT YOUR SON WILL NEVER DRIVE ANY OF YOUR VEHICLES WHILE HE IS AT HOME.

THIS WAY YOUR RATES WILL NOT GO UP BUT REMEMBER THAT IF HE DOES DRIVE ANY OF THEM YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY WILL NOT COVER THE VEHICLE AND ANY AND ALL DAMAGES THAT HE MIGHT CAUSE AS WELL AS ANY LAW SUITS THAT COULD ARISE.
