Many food packages have a letter U in a circle on the front. What does this mean?

It means the food is Kosher in a very strict sense, Circle U or OU is Orthodox Union.

The U inside a circle means Kosher. So does a K inside a circle or a P.

It means the recipe, preparation and processing follows strict Jewish or Hebrew custom for cleanliness. No, it will not make you Jewish or Hebrew.

If you are talking about the sideways styilized U Its called pareve, a hebrew symbol and it means made without meat, meat by products or milk.
