It is to keep any negative energy out while you are working so that your work (spell, ritual, etc.) won't go wrong. It also contains the energy you have risen with your work so that it won't cause havoc with anyone it is not meant for.

To me it is simply protecting from negative energy entering the area where spellwork or rituals are being performed. It's not anything to do with the Christian idea of Devil or evil spirits, for I believe in neither. But I do believe in good and bad energy, and casting the circle is a way to keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out.

if you do not believe in the christian idea of the devil, you are not denying the existence of evil. we don't live in a world of sugar and light. we live in a world that seeks balance. there are "spirits" out there that wish to help us and want to see us succeed, but there are also those that seek to do harm and wish us to fail.
the circle is caste to protect us from unwanted and negative bits. it is possible to work without a circle. since you are new to wicca, it would be best to work with a circle until you have some experience working with energies and your mind has more training.
the act of casting the circle is a signal to yourself that you are creating a seperate, sacred space. the act helps to focus your mind on your working and helps you to step out of your ordinary thoughts.
for example, when you are in the circle, you cannot doubt. doubt can be a troublesome little spirit and the act of casting the circle tells your mind that doubt is not allowed in your thoughts at this time. in this way, casting the circle protects you from doubt during that time.
(doubt is good at nearly all other times. it can lead you to learning more and not just accepting. just when working, doubt often leads to failure.)
i hope this helps and best wishes on your path.

Protection for distractions, psychological threats (so "evil" spirits I guess... but it's more complicated than that), etc. Also, casting a circle is basically asking the elements to watch over what you're doing.
Don't forget to banish the circle... it's just plain rude not to.

Some believe in a balance of all things. For destruction of a forest comes rebirth and so on. That includes a balance of good and evil. Not everyone or every entity is benign. Therefore, you only want in your circle that which will benefit the reason for the casting. You cast, you are in charge and responsible for what is allowed, or not allowed to enter. So, invite consciously.

Heya! A Circle is cast to keep unwanted influences or distractions out. It is very hard to put the proper energy and focus into casting a spell if you are distracted. A Circle is also cast to keep things IN; namely to contain and focus the power you are raising. It's also about putting yourself in the right frame of mind to do magickal work; a way to signal that you are moving from mundane things and concerns to a magickal mindset. My personal fave Circle Casting is below.
"I cast you now, Oh Great Circle of Power, that thou beist a boundary between the world of humanity and the realms of the mighty ones; a guardian and a protection to preserve and contain the power we shall raise herein. Wherefore do I bless and consecrate thee. As above, so below. So mote it be."

If the Circle is cast for protection, it would be protection against any and all negativity. However, I cast a Circle simply to create sacred space. The Circle is my church, and I like to feel its "walls" around me when I'm celebrating the Gods.

A circle is cast for many things; A few things is to concentrate on while casting the circle is it's purpose, ie., protection, guidance, strength, even power.

Not attack...but disrupt and disturb the practitioner...
But the circle doesn't just serve to protect the caster from unwanted influences...it is also used to create a barrier...which contains energy within it...the circle,I mean...
A useful magical tool ;)

Who needs a devil when you've got tons of "good Christians" that hate you? Seems to me, if I were a Wiccan, that's enough reason right there to have some protection.
