Except for the Living Bible and its sibling publications, most Bibles are published with black or red covers. The Living Bibles and their sibs have pictures of smiling faces on the paperback jackets.

Black goes back to Puritan times, where people didn't wear anything other than black or risk the wrath of God. Red is for the blood of Christ , shed for our sins. Sometimes the Gideons put out a green Bible, but I'm not sure why.

No its not a tradition. The bible is done in all sorts of colours, looks like you just happened to choose a red one. There are a lot of dark coloured ones though...

Tradition has changed and Bibles come in all colors. I would like to think that the blood red stands for the blood that Jesus shed for us and our salvation. I had a Catholic Bible as a child and it was rusty brown and one for communion that was white. What matters is what you read inside. God Bless and read that bible everyday! +

You can get any color you want now. I have an old family bible that is a light sage with gold lettering. It was the first one I saw when I was a kid that was not the traditional black or the white communion bibles. Of course, I did not see a lot of bibles when I was young.

That's just the color that the leather happened to be dyed (if the cover is leather). There is no tradition of making the covers of Bibles any particular color. I've seen them in white, black, beige, and green.

The only reason I can think of off the top of my head concerning your question. That would be to represent the blood Jesus shed on the cross for all mankind. I do see other colors nowadays, especially for children. But you are right they are usually red or black.

They are sold in various colors nowadays. It may have been a tradition, or a set rule to publish them in solemn black or red which undoubtedly symbolizes Christ's blood. Mine's navy blue.

Red and black are the two most appropriate colors for this book.

Addition - Tanner; I didn't know your Jesus hated anyone. Are you sure it's not just you?

My bible is pink with a flower on it. My sister's bible is powder blue and brown. They're both very pretty, actually.
