When you talk about the Food Network chefs, you're talking about a very small group of people that are entertainers before chefs. For instance, Anthony Bourdain is a well known chef on TV, but known more for his writing and his TV shows than for his cooking. If I had to choose chefs that I like outside of the Food Channel, it'd be Thomas Keller (Most notably, he opened "The French Laundry" in NY and CA, and he "reinvented" the ratatouille that we see in the animated movie "Ratatouille") and Ron Siegel, a chef who trained under Thomas Keller and was the first American to defeat an original Iron Chef (Hiroyuki Sakai, Battle Lobster).

On the Channel, it'd have to be Masaharu Morimoto, Mario Batali, and if you count the old Iron Chefs, Rokusaburo Michiba. Alton Brown is a great chef too, but he's mostly there for cooking theory, not for inspiration.

Paula Deen is my favorite chef because she LOVES to cook comfort foods that remind me of the food that I grew up on when I was a little girl. I love Paula's southern accent, and I love to hear her laugh, because she is just such a sweet and loveable person! ;-)

Julia Childs, she was in a class all her own. Her cook books should be required reading for anyone who really wants to learn to cook... add The Joy of Cooking to that list :)

Following a 40-year career that has made her name synonymous with fine food, Julia received France’s highest honor, the Legion d'Honneur, in November 2000. And in August 2002, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History unveiled an exhibit featuring the kitchen where she filmed three of her popular cooking shows. Child died in August 2004 at her home in Santa Barbara, California; she was 91. (copied from the website below)

my favorite chef is paula deen. she is funny, the way she talks in her sounthern accent, and like always eats like a pig. JK. also, i love cooking her recipes, they are soo good, and most of them are pretty easy. i always watch her show (which may seem dumb), but she is hillarious and it isnt a waste of time like the millions of reality TV shows out there.

Alton Brown

Alton Brown, because he knows everything about food and hates "fancy" cooking methods that don't work or can be done more easily by another method. He also knows all about the science behind cooking/baking and takes the time to explain it.

Mom, without question.

Alas, she is now deceased. She learned from the greats: The Galloping Gourmet, Julia Childs, etc.
