Because Muslims start their fasting in the lunar of Ramadhan from the 1st day of moon. They have to see the moon new again to end the fasting and have their celebration. Two and a half lunar months later they have to celebrate the
Eid-u-l Azha which is 10th day of the month of Zul-Haj when Haj is performed in Mecca.

Thee is no any other significance of moon except to know when to do certain religious festivals etc. Lunar calender is observed by Jews for their religious holidays, by Japanese and Chinese and by people of India also. Only enemies of Islam accuse Muslim that they believe on Moon God which they have invented some thing new that we have only learned from new born Christiana. What a liars they are?
This is all to try to stop Christians who are converting as Muslims. They can not understand one simple thing that whom God guide to right path, no one can stop and whom God does not guide, no one will accept Islam no matter how much we Muslims try to guide them. Since we have no way of knowing whom God will guide towards Islam and to whom
not, so it is our duty to give the message of Islam to who ever asks us. We don't knock the door any one pestering like Jehovah witness, and Mormon people do.

Kind of like how churches have crosses on their steeples, synagouges have the star of David and if you look at the big Mormon church in Salt Lake City, they have their prophets image on their steeple/dome.
