he will not stop calling my job, when he is here we can not get him to go! he was in a mental facility a week ago and is taking meds; but I'm sure not in the right way. How do I go about getting him hospitalized for longer than a week?

Your right as a mother is to empathize with your schizophrenic son, Learn all you can about his disorder and be there for him. Schizophrenia paranoia when it first strikes is a very traumatic ordeal. Some times voices (not audible voices but unwelcome mental voices in ones mind) tell the patient to kill themselves or that they are going to die. It is vital at this stage for the patient to be in a loving relationship with someone and to take their medications. Putting them in a hospital is the easy way out but devastating to the youngster who so needs human support and love.

If he is afraid of dying one way I got used to dying when the voices told me to die was to realize everyone really dies every night when they go to sleep a state not unlike death. They have no will power to awaken themselves but someone or something does awaken them. so since sleep is not unlike death, you should have no fear of death because your experience is that every time you do "die" you awaken again. You will awaken somewhere else with a new body if you really die. You can ascribe this to God if you want..

Good luck in relating to your schizophrenic son; his is not a character defect it is a serious disease, good mental health, peace and Love!

It sounds like you need the assistance of Social Services in the community where you live. You should be able to find a phone number in the phone book.
