Pros: Dams provide a clean source for producing and storing large quantities of energy. This allows for an as-needed energy plant.

Cons: These huge structures disrupt the normal ecosystem of rivers and bodies of water before and after the dam. The dam basically puts a kink into the river, so fish and other organisms cannot exist as they normally would. There are many state sponsored studies in New Mexico that have explored the the effects of hydroelectric dams upon organisms living in and near the lakes and tributaries fed by the Rio Grande River. Whenever water is is released, or the kink is undone, the water flow creates a large amount of energy but also disrupts the deeper more settled portions of these bodies of water. The loss of a great number of deep dwelling fish and the explosion of smaller fish have been attributed to this water disruption. Birds and other animals can be frightened away from their normal patterns of behavior, mating behaviors being the most significant. Wikipedia gives some pretty solid information if you want to take a look. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroelectricity

Dams. What we need to do is concentrate hydro power plants on rivers that can take the effects of the reservoir created, i.e. the wild samon of Oregon and Washington. They need free passage to way up stream and back again to the ocean.

Advantages: It is cheap and emits no air pollution because no fuel is used.

Disadvantages, can only work where there is a river with enough water flow and enough height drop, and usually a large dam must be build, flooding a large area and destroying the natural river ecosystem.
