I always knew that selling pirate dvd's was illegal but I was informed that if you download them for your own private us and dontmake copies then it is ok. I was also told that if you only have one copy of a dvd that is ok as well. Is this true?

It depends. When you purchase a DVD or movie legitmately then you are granted a license for personal use (ie; you can play it in your house but not in prisons, schools busses - basically all the stuff it says at the start of a DVD with a warning).

When you download a movie illegally then you do not have that license and as such it is illegal for you to watch it. If you burn copies then once again it is illegal as you do not have a license to do so. The more copies, the more crimes you commit. It starts to get really serious if you then sell the pirated DVD's for profit - that's when they start handing out the big fines and jail sentences and the like!

A perfect example of illegal vs legal downloads is iTunes. If you pay to download a vodcast or a song from iTunes, not only will you have the song, but you will be able to use it personally as part of the fee you pay covers a personal use license. If you read the conditions of these licenses (not all but some), you may be allowed to make one copy - that is to put it on CD or DVD. Any more than that and you are violating the conditions and that's where it becomes illegal.

I think that's where you may have been misinformed.

Like, if you record a tv show or movie, that is not illegal, as long as it is for your personal use. You can make a dvd in someone else's house, even, using his cable service.

The moment you sell it or profit from it, it becomes illegal
