Cain knew he was sinning. I don't know how you get that. First he was jealous, then he was greedy, and then he killed. How in the world would he not know that he was doing wrong?
Then on top of all that he lied to God by saying "am I my brothers keeper?" which basically is other words for "I have no idea".
So no, I don't think it was added later.

Cain thought he could keep what he did to his brother a secret from God. When God asked Cain where his brother was, God was giving him a chance to admit his crime. Cain was jealous of his brother because God accepted Abel's offering and not his. The story of Cain & Abel points to what Jesus did on the cross for our sins by shedding His blood, something which God was well pleased with. It is not by works we are saved, which was what Cain's offering represented, but by the Grace of God through Jesus Christ, His son, which was represented by Abel's offering.

I always took that as an arrogant rebellious answer. Would you answer back to your parents, let alone God, with a question that implies they are stupid? Cain's answer also indicates the condition of his heart, not caring for his fellow man.

He killed his brother. You're telling me he didn't know it was wrong...
Gd told him to do right, because sin was knocking at the door.
He knew. He lied to God where Abel was. It's sad, too, because I believe Cain knew that God already knew.
that's what sin will do to your mind and heart.
