13 stripes, 7 red and 6 white.
Originally there were 13 stripes for the 13 original states. When the next two states were added, stripes were added as well as stars, so at one point there were 14 and 15 stripes! After that it was decided to go back to 13 stripes for the original states and just add stars for the new states.

Expanding on Mr. Knowitall's response, there were only ten stripes on the flag during the American Civil War because three of the original thirteen States, Virginia and the two Carolinas, left the Union to join the Confederacy.
