Why is it that when I talk to God, he never talks back?

Is it because Im really talking to myself?

I was an atheist for 11 years mainly because I didn't receive an answer to prayers asked when I was younger.

It's very subjective for each person. However, if you want to earnestly seek a response, try some of the following for a few weeks:
-Scriptural study. This is used as a cure-all, but it's really a first step.
-Treating your body as a temple to the Holy Spirit* (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
*Clean up your diet for a few weeks... eat more natural foods, avoid alcohol, tobacco, and stimulants.
*Don't fulfill lusts of the flesh through inappropriate sexual contact or masturbation.

-Meditation when possible
-Fasting, specifically cutting off food for a day. Denying an earthly comfort is one way to shrug off the natural man in search of the spiritual one.
-When you pray, ask specific questions.
-After you pray, know that the Holy Spirit can guide you in may different ways, but the most common response is a "burning in the bosom", a physical affirmation of what you prayed about.

God rarely answers directly, because it is how you respond to the Holy Spirit's subtle promptings and life's adversities that define you and your quest to return to heaven with honor. Try these things for a few weeks before you write off the meaning of life entirely.

God doesn't hear sinners prayers. If you pray for forgiveness of your sins, and if you are truly repentant in your heart, for God can see, whats in your heart, he will answer your prayers and will forgive you. I don't thank you are a true believer, if you were, you would have the faith, you would know God answers prayer, God watches over His people, and will see to their every need. He answers all of his peoples prayers, the answer may not be yes all the time, some times it is no.

He said all He needs to say in the Bible. Open it up, study it, and "listen" to what it says!

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)

You could pray to the gallon of milk in your fridge, or your ab-lounge, or your Shirley Temple DVD collection, and the results would be exactly the same as if you prayed to god. You'd get what you wanted sometimes, because of chance, and you would also not get what you wanted, which is also due to chance, and not some supernatural influence.

Do you only talk to God when you need it? "Talking to God" does not mean he will talk back, and you two will have a gran old' time. It means confiding in him. because even though, he knows your deepest secrets, and thoughts, he wants you to tell him. It takes time, little by little you will notice the change.

I wouldnt get too worried that he/she/it doesnt talk back. I would worry when he does.

God is limitless on how He communicates.
through His spirit
angels
His word
through other believers
through nonbelievers
small still voice
just to name a few...

the more fine tuned your "receiver" is, the easier it is "find" His voice.
