Yep, it was called unconditional surrender. It worked pretty well, too.

No, I' pretty darn sure there wasn't an exit strategy! We went in with the idea of winning or else, we knew we had to win so we couldn't exit & hope they wouldn't come calling; they declared the war on us, remember? Both Germany & Japan had to be defeated or they would have attacked us here. We felt it a better choice to fight them there! I'm sure that we could have gotten our troops out, if we really needed to but, I don't think that was ever a real consideration. An exit strategy is not something that we seem to ever plan ahead; we certainly didn't have one in either Korea or Vietnam! We don't have one for Iraq either, even though we talk about bringing our troops home, no one yet has come up with any plan of how we are to do it!

Germany, Japan, and Italy invaded other countries.
We fought them, to liberate the countries they took over, and were trying to take over.
They were, themselves, countries.
The plan was for those countries to surrender, which each did. When all 3 had surrendered, the war was over.
VE day was he day the German government, which had taken much of Europe, surrendered; VJ day was when the Japanese government surrendered.
After that, we implemented the Marshal Plan, which enabled the Axis countries to become economically strong democracies.

I still can't comprehend having an exit/pullout strategy.
The only one should be victory and/or surrender of the enemy.
You can plan a war but to make it go according to plan, the enemy would have to agree to it.

I'm sure there was, but WWII probably not. That was more of a going all out kind of war, if we pulled out we would have had Japanese and Nazis coming to our borders within the decade.
