A composite (tooth colored) filling sets immediately upon application of the ultraviolet curing light used at the end of the filling procedure. An amalgam (silver) filling takes 24 hrs to fully set and harden. If you have the latter, chew on the other side of your mouth the first day and avoid anything hard and brittle, like nuts,ice,etc.

It depends on what filling material was used. If it is an amalgam (silver) filling, you should wait about an hour. I wait two hours just to be sure it is set, but they say the newer types of amalgams are good after an hour. If it is a white filling, you can eat right away.

You can get you something to eat when you leave to office. When the dentist shines that light in your mouth, that makes the filling "set". You don't have to wait at all.

Your dentist should let you know, but I doubt you would need to wait more than a couple hours. I've had several fillings and don't recall it being any substantial amount of time.

I would wait 6-9 months just to be sure. If your dentist said less he is trying to make it where you will have to visit him more often. He gets paid when you visit him. You probably didn't even need the filling. Dentists are crooks. They often come from broken homes. I read somewhere many of them are former altar boys...and you KNOW what that means! They are devout Catholics. Saddam Hussein was training to be a dentist when he decided to take over Iraq in 1978.
