I am American (live in the US) but hold both a US and a UK passport as my mother is English.
I was just in the UK for a visit to see family and I noted a big difference between now and when I was there a year or so ago. The small pubs are trying to comply but they are closing right and left. Even the bigger ones are being hurt. Every 5 minutes someone gets up to go outside for a smoke so that good laugh that people or on about gets interupted...... hence lower sales and less taxes the government gets. The whole thing seemed sureal.
I noted that more people are just calling it a night and having people over at home. What makes england is the social interaction of all ages as opposed to the US. My extreme example would be an 85 year old that I know. He would come out for a few pints and a smoke and that was his social interaction. Now he just stays home. Late in life and after fighting for his country they take his life away..... so he will just die.
I am curious though. Everybody blames it on EU regulations. But the french stood up and said "no way" are we doing this.
In the US in most places it is up to the business.... smoke free or not. Or there is the restaurant/pub and there is the pub that you may smoke in.

I smoked cigis for 20 years and I agree with the ban in restaraunts and malls and such. But pubs and clubs should be able to have smoking-drinking areas that have ventilation so if a group of friends go out together and theres at least 1 smoker the person does,nt have to go outside or around the block for a drag.I have heard that some mps have called to ban people from smoking in there cars and homes.I think this to be very stupid cause how would you police it."on candid camera maybe." Maybe there needs to be more advertising thats aimed at common sense about the affects of passive smoking instead of alienating smokers. As long as tobacco is legal people will smoke in public.

The smoking ban was nothing more than a PR exercise by the government the truth is if you asked any smoker if he or she thought there should be a separate area for smokers in public places they would all have said yes.
I smoke and if i thought my smoke was annoying someone then i would move or put it out as would most smokers.
The thing that bugs me is the extreams some people are going to,i went on holiday a couple of weeks ago and could not believe that the airport was totally smoke free.
We got there early and went into departures they used to have small rooms with extractor fans so you could smoke without annoying anybody but now there gone why?
But the thing that got me was they will happily sell you thousands of cigarettes in duty free and cash in on the smokers just don't do it here.

Instead of an outright ban, all businesses should have been required to post a conspicuous sign at the entryways of their establishment. There should have been a choice of 3 signs for display:
"Non smoking facility" (Smokers take your business and money elsewhere)
"Smoking areas available" (If you can not tolerate smoke, please take your business elsewhere, all others welcome)
"Smoking allowed in all areas" (if you can't take smoke, there is no where in here you will be comfortable, please take your business and money elsewhere)
Then let the market decide! Would all three types of businesses survive? Would Smoking facilities rule the day? Would smoking facilities be forced to close? The public should have been allowed to "vote with their dollars".
Whenever there is a choice between letting the government decide an issue or letting the market decide ... I will always favor letting the market decide!

Nobody's Business and there should Be No regulation of a Legal Substance...It's Your air Too..and there should be a separated space for Smoker's in Public facilities, they Pay high Taxes for Non Smokers to enjoy those same facilities and Parks. Remember No Taxation without Representation?
Otherwise it should be Outlawed just like Marijuana, heroine, Crack and Meth...
In Europe, marijuana is Legal and Cigarette smoking is not...go figure that one out and it's done Publicly in Tea houses and coffee houses.. Interesting the same non smoker's are pro abortion oooo how moral can that be?
There are More Harmful things in the water, your home and in the air more dangerous than smoking. Plastics, Mold, formaldehyde in Carpets, paint, ASBESTOS in building materials and they have Not banned that or those buildings!

I entirely agree with the ban, at long last I can go to a function without having to breath in that foul smoke, I do not now have to go home smelling of the stench that I have been forced to endure all evening, my not smoking does not effect anyone else but people smoking does effect me, why do smokers think that they have the right to make me suffer from their habit, if they want to smoke then it is right that they do it away from me and not me be forced to stay away from public places, smokers have had it their way since smoking was first thrust onto the unsuspecting public and I am over the moon that we now have the ban, hopefully the next step will be to ban it on public streets, that way I will never have to smell that horrible stink ever again, the motor industry are being forced to stop pollution, so why is it wrong to stop people polluting, after all for most people a car is a necessity, smoking is the opposite of necessary.

Wow I'm surprised Charlie D changed my mind. I thought I was for the ban but Charlie has a point.
I don't smoke, I don't like going places where people smoke. So if I'm just considering myself then I like the ban but government really shouldn't be regulating legal substances in private businesses.

restaurants and bars should be allowed to set up smoking areas with good ventilation and a couple of comfortable chairs away from the main business area but that is all. I do smoke but i have no right or desire to foist my bad habit on anyone else no matter how irritated I am with all the bullying smokers have to put up with in the press, from politicians and..my personal pet hate..those people who have an attack of breathlessness and wheezing the moment they see that you have a pack of cigarettes and before they have any idea if you have been smoking in the area or not!
I was dining out with a group of non-smokers, including one who,if a cigarette appeared on the horizon, put on an Oscar winning show of reactions of the wheezing sort..the restaurant allowed smoking..it was abroad..and there were ashtrays on the tables but I had noticed an armchair in a corner of the foyer with an ashtray next to it..for staff use apparently..and I excused myself from the table and went and had my cigarette in peace..and was soon joined by two other people from different tables who may or may not have thought that we were supposed to be out there, but who did not mind it in the least. We know its unpleasant for non-smokers and very few of us would think it right to introduce anyone else to the addiction..and I have signed petitions to prevent smoking in places where it is impossible to segregate smokers and non-smokers..but how about a little tolerance and consideration in return?

I love the no smoking ban, i go to the clubs and pubs and not have to choke on the smoke from everyone else, the pubs actually smell better now and my clothes dont stink of smoke and i can also take my family to the pub and not worry about the hazards so i'm all for it.
