I had never flown and we were going over Galveston, TX. I asked if we would fly over the ocean and she said "I don't know, but if you look down and see it, then we'll be flying over it". My husband says I asked for it but I thought it was a legit question and didn't expect a rude answer. Isn't it part of her job to know at least a little about the flight route?

I agree, that's a little rude. Nothing off the charts, but still...it's a bit unprofessional.

I understand their job is really stressful and frustrating and all, but you were just asking a simple question. All she had to say was yes or no. However, FYI, flight attendants probably don't usually know the exact route they are flying since navigation isn't part of their job.

Flying these days is a chore, ain't it?

No, it's not really part of her job.

Without having heard her tone, I couldn't really tell you if she was being rude. She may simply have not known the answer to your question.

Approach routes for airports change with the weather conditions, traffic levels, etc. Even if she was familiar with the route, she might not have known which approach was being used at that time - that's the job of the people in the cockpit.

While many (rude) people have the impression that flight attendants are "glorified waitresses", let me state that this is incorrect. Serving drinks to the passengers is a tertiary duty at best.

Their primary function is to ensure the *SAFETY* of the passengers in the cabin. It is a tribute to the importance of their job, that few passengers ever get to experience more than the standard safety speech and the seat and tray check aspect of this job.

Be thankful that you don't ever experience the situations where the oxygen masks deploy, the emergency exits get used, and these "waitresses" are herding a couple hundred panicked people out of the plane in an orderly fashion before the fuel tank explodes.

I think she was ok. It didnt seem like she gave you an attitude (because she used the words "i dont know" )

I dont think its all that necessary for a flight attendant to know which states, countries and/or body of water the plane is flying over right now because I dont think it really helps them do their job better. Also, like what somebody else said, a flight route can change in air, so the flight attendants wouldnt know about the change unless the captain announces it.

Yeah, that was pretty rude. I am the queen of sarcasm, and I know sarcasm when I hear it. I know their jobs are harder than some people might think (my aunt is a flight attendant and has back problems from the cart, lifting bags, etc), but that doesn't mean they have to be rude when someone is asking a simple, legitimate question.

She did have the courtesy of mentioning "I don't know". I don't think she was rude, I've seen worse. The rude ones harass and intimidate you over petty nonsense. Wait until you get one like that. You're one of those bratty customers people in the service industry HATE. I'm sorry, we are not gurus, we don't know everything!

NO!!! They are glorified waitresses, and they are getting ruder. On a recent trip to Turkey,I asked for a look at a bottle of perfume, whilst one passed with the duty free trolley. The cheeky mare looked at me appologetically, and said "ooh, that one is the most expensive one we sell, at £ 68-00 a bottle," almost insinuating that it was way out of my price range.I handled the box, pulled a face, and replied dryly,"oh no, that's far too cheap, I'll pop into Harrad's when I get back home, my wife is worth more than a measly £68-00, thanks.
