We shouldn't be tolerant of beliefs, just the right to have those beliefs. There are lots of beliefs that are vile. For example, there's a group that things that having sex with young boys is a good thing. I really am not tolerant of that belief. However, it is their right to believe that. One can only prosecute them for carrying out that belief, not for having it.
Religious belief is harmful to society. It is a parasitic belief that has promoted more intolerance, hatred, torture and killing than any other. It is a superstition, but it is one that feeds off itself and promotes itself using emotional manipulation. Religions, themselves, try to dictate what you can and can't think. In the Ten Commandments, for example, it tells you not to covet, as if you can really turn off wanting something.
Still, it is a person's right to hold a religious belief. You can't legislate what a person thinks. All you can do is educate people to the dangers of a belief system. Hopefully, in the free market of ideas, those belief systems that promote humanity will eventually overcome those that retard progress.

As you can see from these answers, we all have a different definition of "tolerance" - from a Christian perspective, if we tell people the truth about Jesus Christ, we are labeled "intolerant". Atheists who want to promote their godless amoral left-wing liberal agenda on us - through the courts, the school boards, the political system - may consider us "intolerant" if we don't let them always get their way.
You see how tricky it can be? I would say in general - stand up for the truth, fight for what is right.
Thank God the early Christians were more concerned with spreading the good news about "JC" than with being "PC"!

By accepting that they have the right to believe as they do. We don't have to agree with it and there is nothing wrong with debating it but when we start to put down a person or treat them differently because of their beliefs we become intolerant. Tolerance is NOT believing as they do or accepting that they are right. We can totally disagree with something but still tolerate its existence.
Agreed.

It would be a lot easier if people kept their faith to themselves and didn't use their beliefs to judge other people. I have no reason to care about what someone believes privately. But if you make those beliefs public, you invite criticism from those who disagree.

Accept that other people have the right to believe things we do not
Do not assume that other people are stupid or perverse or wicked because they do not believe that we believe.
Listen to other people's arguments and positions charitably the way you want others to listen to yours.
Examine one's own preconceptions and biases
Read about other people's cultures and beliefs but know your own and the reasons behind those beliefs ,traditions and positions.
Make friends with people of other faiths and viewpoints;respect them and demand that they show the same respect to you.

If you are referring to Christians being tolerant, I have yet to read where Jesus told His followers to be intolerant of others.

By knowing that it is okay for people to think differently from how we think.
We don't have to agree with them, but we should respect them.
